Frozen But So Hot - Painted Frozen Valencia Orange 1M Coupe
BIMMERPOST NEWS Frozen But So Hot - Painted Frozen Valencia Orange 1M Coupe There are not many things people complain about when it comes to the 1 Series M Coupé (1M). But, one of the main complaints was its limited color choices. BMW offered only three colors for the 1M: Alpine White, Sapphire Black and Valencia Orange. With very few exceptions, BMW turned down requests to produce 1Ms in other (read: Individual) colors. For this reason, many a 1M owner decided to address this “shortcoming” in the aftermarket. One of these included this Frozen Valencia Orange 1M Coupe - the only one we know of in existence. Inspired by the "frozen" matte paints offered by BMW, the car's owner brought his Valencia Orange 1M to a friend's paint shop to have the paint converted to a frozen color. That's right, this is no mere vinyl wrap. The outcome looks amazing and involved quite an interesting process. It entailed removing (most of) the original factory clear coat without scratching the Valencia Orange paint and then replacing the clear coat with BMW's original factory frozen/matte clear coat (P.S. this is the only difference between a standard BMW color and their frozen colors). What made the process even trickier was the inability to touch up the frozen clear coat. The paint shop had to clear coat an entire part (e.g. roof or hood) correctly at once or do it all over again. To make this happen, the owner was without his car for weeks, but the outcome was clearly (no pun intended) worth it. By the use of BMW’s original frozen clear coat, Valencia Orange retained its vibrant and rich metallic color with depth, something you lose with a matte vinyl wrap. We wish the driver many happy and safe miles in this truly unique and -- at least to these eyes -- stunning 1 Series M Coupé. Second half of photos above are from the 2012 M Festival and taken by Piotr (M3 Piotr). |

Thanks for explaining the process, very interesting and involved! I'd hate to be the paint shop guy who screwed up a panel! He's in for a long weekend! The results are really worth it though. |

Not a fan of this color at all. Frozen or not frozen.

Looks stunning and even better in person. Very unique paint job. The guys from BMW ///M Division even talked to the owner at the ///M Festival during the 24hr Race at the Ring back in May 2012 to get the info on the paint shop that did the job. They were very impressed. BMW ///M Division uses a paint shop in Munich for touching/repainting their Frozen Fleet, but they were impressed with the quality and craftsmanship of this paint shop.
I wish I took more pics of this car.

Can't be any different than gloss clear coat.

It is interesting to know how it was done. Removing the clear coat must have been a real hard job.

I would hope so but I remember reading somewhere that (BMW) makes you sign some type of realease form for their matte finishes and weather/bird damage?
