I haven't seen a DIY either. You might want to review the pictures at "realOEM" to get idea of how it goes together.

With respect to warranty or not, isn't this a safety item? Doesn't the dealer have obligations beyond the warranty for safety items? Maybe not but I think others have reported the dealership covered it. If you do it yourself, be sure to review the tsb and "do it right". There is a tab that needs to be ground off.

My light was out of warranty (apparently bulbs and lights are the only thing not covered by my extended warranty), but my "advisor" at Irvine BMW just emailed BMW and they quickly okayed it, and got me in a nice loaner immediately. They have had my car for two days (which is okay with me, fewer miles on my car) and all is good, they really are awesome at Irvine bmw. Derek is awesome.

Thanks for the "realOEM" tip. Real easy to take off.... I just crazy glued the cracked lens and ordered a new light assembly.

FYI Central Fl members--- Fields BMW South Orlando SUCKS!! Never been treated so bad at a car dealer.

TSB

I always though the TSBs were done regardless of warranty status.

Separately, In CFL you have to go to Winter Park, they have always treated us well and done what we've asked. Dave Gilbert is a great advisor there.

Noop. That would be a RECALL not TSB. TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) lets the dealer's personnel know about problems that a particular model has and a known fix. They are only covered under warranty and ONLY if the customer complains about it.

A recall is a safety problem that the manufacture or that the US government forces the manufacture - to fix. They have no time limit nor mileage limit. As long as a recall has not been performed... the dealer must repair the car for that item.

Its pretty easy to replace the third brake light. Its held on by four nuts. First you need a pry tool to pull up the (8 ?) expanding nuts that hold on the trunk liner carpet on the trunk lid. IF your car has a EU warning triangle you will need a T25(?) torx to remove the two mounting tabs. Then you will see the four nuts that hold on the brake light lens.

Here is what the 3rd brake light lens looks like...

Well, I just noticed the 3rd light that was replaced a few months back before warranty ran out now has condensation in it after a car wash. Looks like I will have to replace it on my own dime when this one cracks off

Would you mind writing a DIY on how to replace the light? I'm kind of a noob so I need some help taking out and replacing the light

There's actually been a revised unit that is being sold. I'm not sure of the part number but its not as easy to replace as the first and 2nd revision. This new part requires you to trim the middle tab that sticks down in the opening. After the tab has been cut, you need to use touch up paint to make sure the exposed metal doesn't rust where the cut was made. The new housing is a real tight fit also, but I still haven't had any issues with it breaking. If your not good with diy or tools, have it done professionally and make absolutely sure you or the person installing the new light paints the metal where the tab was cut or grinded off or it will rust.

I wish I was still under warranty :'(
At least I got the convertible top and spacers replaced under warranty. That would've been expensive.
Thanks for the reply!

I realize that the last post was back in May of this year, but I thought I should add that I am an owner of a 2008 128i Coupe and that I have also noticed cracks in my 3rd brake light.

It is a CPO. I will check with the local dealership to see if this is common and if it is covered in any way.

I am on my second one, which is cracked, and being fixed in a week! I
am out of warranty; however, this should be covered under two year parts warranty! I am sick of this!

Im in the same boat, car was out of warranty when the first one went. Had it replaced, but now the second one is showing small cracks and letting it minor moisture after washing the car.

Should be covered under genuine parts additional 2 year warranty. This replacement only last like 2 months :/

Well I took the car in today and got it repaired. Only problem is that they said its not covered under warranty. Two guys I spoke to at BMW said they think it is covered. The dealer I bought the car from said he thought it was. But on the day I had to hand over £125. Not impressed. I'll be calling and speaking to a Manager in the dealership I bought it from tomorrow.

I'd be kicking up a fuss mate. if u paid for it once it is covered under 2 years parts warranty. I just had mine replaced under this clause. however I was interested to find out the warranty period starts from the time I paid for the first replacement it doesn't apply for each new light.

Did just that. Kicked up a bit of a fuss and the dealership where I got the car have agreed to reimburse me the cost.
Happy Days!

Ah good work mate, happy to hear the results were positive. Just make sure you keep the receipts for proof of purchase and warranty etc.

the NEW 3rd brake light does not look like Dakelone's parts blow up.
It does not have the cut out at the top middle. The plastic is solid now. It will not fit into the slot with the metal tab at the top. I was just changing mine and came here looking for help.
I'll go start taking photos.

Is it fair to assume that this won't be an issue on a new (MY2013) car? I'm hoping the new part is making its way into production cars.
