Exclamation Old runflats and hit a pothole.. Strange sounds coming from the tire.

Hey guys.

I have 30k on my runflats. I know that's way too many miles. I was actually going to trade my car in at the end of the year so I was holding off...

Anyways I was driving home tonight and it was really dark and I must have hit a pot hole because it sounded horrible and my low tire pressure light for my front right tire came on. I pulled over but there are very few lights where I was and it didn't even look like the tire was flat.

So as I got closer to home I put my windows down and noticed on every rotation it was making a horrible screeching sound, very loud also. I got home and it's still way too dark but the tire didn't look that low and I couldn't see any other damage. Anyone know what the screeching sound might be, could something else have broke when I hit the pothole?

The car seemed to be driving straight and I will take a closer look in the morning but if the tire isn't flat what the hell is making that screeching noise? Any ideas?

Thanks

It doesn't look bent at least I couldn't tell in the dark. Would a bent rim make such a noise?

Probably hard to tell in the dark. Have it put up on a lift and remove the wheel and have everything examined thoroughly.

Yeah I'll be able to take a better look tomorrow. I really don't want to tow it so may try to drive the 5 miles to BMW.

If you have run flats your tire may not look like it's flat when it looses air pressure

I recently bent a rim on my Prius. I think I hit the biggest pothole I've ever seen in my life. But it didn't make any strange noises or anything like you describe. I knew something was wrong because my steering wheel was vibrating and I could feel the vibrations in the pedals as well.

I couldn't tell my rim was bent by looking at it, but when they pulled the tire off we could see it pretty easily.

Took it in and the tire just popped no bent rim.

New Question:

I am trading it in this month anyways, if I put regular tires on it will it reduce my trade-in value?

Are you trading it in at a BMW dealer? If so, possibly. If not, I would say it won't reduce the value by much. Most used 1ers that I looked at from other non-BMW dealers didn't have run-flats on them.

The amount you will save by putting fresh regular tires vs RFTs is probably greater than what you would lose from the trade, if any.

Yes trading it into BMW. I'm thinking of putting the cheapest tires possible on it and then trading it in.

There's a decent chance they won't even look at the tires. If they do, it might only be to see if they still have tread left. I would go the cheap route.

I got a flat in my runflat equipped 135i last year and there was no drama at all. Didn't even know I had the flat until the TPMS notified me. Tried to put some air in the tire but it would accept none. Drove cautiously to get a new tire and while driving it didn't feel bad or anything, and I also didn't hear anything different.
