Start with a software tune, the Power Box will be the best for the 128.

I'm guessing you can get up to 260 hp. An Injen air intake plus the pbx will give you 20hp, each of them advertised gains of 10 hp a piece. The addition of a new exhaust system could add between 10-20 hp?

when you say swap internals, do you mean any engine component? there are some modifications that you can make to your x28 motor to make it an x30 motor.

unfortunately i think the parts and tune run like $4,000. there is a thread on the 3 forums about someone who did the swap. it's also linked here somewhere on this forum as well.

Probably more like 6-8 each for the intake and PBX, and 2-5 for the exhaust (at the wheels).

So 14-20 hp, max 25hp. After that you'll need to start doing some more serious work (new intake components that you find on the 130i's N52).

Sell it and get a 135i. It would be much cheaper to simply get an N54 car than it would be to modify an N52 car. Never mind the fact that a stock 135i will still have a powertrain warranty.

sorry man but that's ricer math

10hp claimed from intake but 10hp claimed from tune does not equal 20 hp gains. maybe the combined effect is 20hp but mods are not additive, 10 + 10 and so on

What do you mean by swap internals? Hell, if tuned properly, you can add forced induction or nitrous to the stock engine and run just fine. (like I said though, tuned properly). So what exactly are you really trying to accomplish? Max amount of power with just "bolt-on" performance? I.E. intake, headers, exhaust, throttle body, tune, etc...
You can very realistically add a 50 shot of N2O to the car with a colder heat range plug and a custom tune, spray when you need to, and be just fine. Then again its just my educated opinion, as I have installed forced induction and nitrous to otherwise stock vehicles and performed well.

he means changing the N52 parts from 128i to N52 used in 130i. or whatever the differences in 2 engines.

You know stock 128i is 230hp, 130i is 265hp.. which they are using the same engine N52

If you call this ricer math, could you explain me the correct way to go about adding this up, thanks . I'm not trying to be a dick just curious so I won't make the same mistake twice.

i'll give you an example on the car that i modded the most: a 2003 tiburon V6 GT. (stock: 171 hp crank, 2.7L NA)

the injen intake was dynoed to add 17hp to the front wheels.
a borla exhaust was dynoed to add 8 hp to the front wheels.
both mods together were dynoed to only add a total of 20 hp.
adding a ported intake manifold added only 2-3 more on top of that.

it's all about engine flow, as you open more things up certain mods give you deminishing returns, as it's already flowing way better than before.

the right way would be to quote dynoed examples of cars, and list the mods the car had.... this would be a somewhat reasonable estimate of power increase. a base dyno when car was stock would help your point even further

correct, start with a base dyno and redyno with each additional mod (if you really care to understand individual gains and how they work in conjunction).

I've heard about "super sprint" drive by wire module for 2001+ cars I saw it on turner motor sport and I was wondering exactly how well it would perform on my 128i

Another piece that is different in the higher rated N52s is the exhaust manifolds - there are two. Most people talk about the down pipes or from the downpipes to the exhaust tips but if you want the maximum hp, I suspect you need to also replace the manifolds (at nearly $1000 each).

So you could be talking about ~$500 for the multi-path intake from a X5 or 130i, possibly bigger injectors, and a couple thousand worth of exhaust manifolds plus several hundred more for the rest of the exhaust. You could thus end up with several thousand dollars in parts to gain maybe 40-50 hp.

If you really want to know which parts are different, put your VIN into RealOEM and open up another window where you put a X5 or 130i as close as possible in production date to your engine and then look up what is different concentrating on intake and exhaust systems. I think you'll find the cams the same but differences in the intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and possibly injectors.

This guy has it right. At this point, his header probably needed to be upgraded as it was restricting his engine's CFM.

To the poster, the N52 can produce a ton of HP with the right parts; it has the right base for sure, just not enough after-market support yet, which means parts are expensive. If a k24 (2.4 litre) can push out 295 whp (dynojet) without a turbo, certainly the N52 can do better. Mind you, this guy's build is full racing and probably quite expensive, but it gets the point across. Besides the fact that an 300 WHP NA car will have incredible throttle response and no lagged/surging power delivery, unlike a turbo.

To the guy who told the poster to sell his car and go buy a car with a turbo, shame on you. If you're looking for a ton of power nice and easy from the N52; find/install a small turbo setup (running at 6 or 7 psi) for your machine and call it a day; why buy a whole new car? In general, getting a ton of HP from a turbo is easy and relatively cheap 3-5k, vs NA which can get very expensive but generally nets a faster car (aside from drag racing).

It's up to you how you want to go, but don't ditch the car because it's not giving you want you want, just decide the direction you want to go (turbo/na) and stick with it; both will be rewarding.
