Cup holders' coating coming off!?
So last night I was cleaning the inside of my car and I had spilled something in my cup holders recently (iced tea? something sweet.) so as I'm going, I take a car cleaning wipe and start rubbing it around the inside of the holders. With it being a sweet drink, I had to give it a good couple of wipes before it started to loosen up and come off. Then I notice some black specs on my wipe. After a few seconds, the cup holders dry off, and I notice the finish on the bottom is COMING OFF. What the hell? Has this happened to anyone else??? I'm assuming this would be covered under warranty since I didn't scrape them or use anything abrasive. Haven't had a chance to call the dealer yet.

Hasn't happened to me but sounds like the factory warranty would cover it.

The material around the cup holder is the same as on the steering wheel around the buttons. My steering wheel peeled, and they covered it under warranty. They get it a lot, apparently.

My steering wheel has been amazing. Not a single flaw. But the one and only time I try to clean the cupholders, it just comes right off. I can't imagine it's that easy to take them out either, they don't just pop out like in the E46's. Won't they have to take most of the center console apart to get it out?

Im not sure, but the main cupholder in the car is a joke...i literally think they slapped it on as the car was rolling off the assembly line. Its firmly stuck in place, yet seems to be in eternal peril of breaking off.

And now that you mention it... I think my cup holder is showing similar signs of wear at about 55k miles. But it's no big deal

that rubberized coating has peeled on bmws since the e46 era. definitely nothing new. it's cheap and it sucks lol. you really have to be careful when cleaning it. I just had my M sport steering wheel trim replaced for the exact same reason. the cupholders are part of the center console which is a one piece part. roughly $150 if i remember correctly. Just talk to a service advisor who takes care of you . My SA is amazing and has me flawlessly taken care of, had the trim replaced free and they threw in brakes and oil change even though i was pretty far from the threshold. all about making friends.
