e90 Stolen / Recovered. Replace Key?

Hi,

I'm sad to say our e90 was stolen about 2 weeks ago from in front of our house. I beleive the baby sitter left the back door unlocked and they stole a key.

Car was recovered in San Diego, and is on the way back up, and will need some minor work, but should be OK.

To put out minds at ease, we would like to replace the keys with new ones in case the orginal is by some chance still local. We don't need to go through this again!

Is it a big deal to have the e90 re-keyed?

Any help would be great! Thanks!!

I think they can disable the fob that was lost through the car's computer, which should negate the need to replace all the keys you have.

I'm sure your dealer can do it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it set you back a couple hundred bucks.

If they stole they entire fob with the metal key inside, they'd still be able to open the door, glovebox, and trunk.

hate to be the conspiracy theorist but what an amazing setup. An inherently theft deterrent car (Its not a civic et al, plus the fob mechanism), stolen because someone may have left a door unlocked. In my opinion the babysitter had her hand in it.
HA!
There I said it.

I was tempted to make an off-color joke about fingering the babysitter, but then I thought better of it.

I'd be more worried about what kind of neighborhood I lived where just leaving a back door unlocked just once draws thieves. Either you are incredibly unlucky, live in a bad neighborhood or something else happened.

Either way, ask your dealer how much to totally re-key (key and fob) the car. Maybe the insurance will add this into the rest of the damage bill.

Glad you got the car back in one piece.

By the way, how was it recovered? Did BMW Assist do its job? How long did take and how far did it get?

His location reads Seattle and he wrote it was recovered in San Diego. That’s about 1200 miles and would take 22 hours of straight driving to accomplish.

mebiii, am I correct in assuming the car was gone for at least 2 days before it was recovered? If so, that leads me to believe BMW Assist didn't help.

When did you notice it was missing? Or did the babysitter notice right away?

Well the babysitter was grandma, and I don't think she is that clever. It was about 14 days before they found it. Wish we did have BMW Assist.

new keys can be ordered and re-programmed, but you, probably, will pay out of your pocket

Actually, the insurance company should reimburse this as part and parcel of the repairs on the car - all under one deductible (if a deductible applies).

Personally, if one of my cars was stolen, I wouldn't want to see it again.

I'm just wondering how can the baby sitter left the back door unlocked if you lock it using your fob . and If you don't have BMW Assist at least get a lowjack(It gives you around 15% off your insurance too)

Exactly. Good luck, but 1200 miles and 14 days is a long time and lord knows what happened...

Wow, sorry to hear about your woes!! I agree with the previous post that you can probably have the key disabled, but if they have the metal key too I would be concerned.

If you are able to have the car rekeyed and it costs you $$ check with your insurance company - I would think that should be covered by your policy under the circumstances.

Let us know how you make out and what you decide.
