And the car already has sort of a cult following IMO, and it only just went out of production. I'm not saying our cars are going to be worth a whole lot down the line, but I think E82's will be remembered and recognized as characterful driver's cars, for whatever that is worth.
This is exactly what I meant.

There's no one definition of a classic car. In Texas, every car over 20 years old is a classic and can apply for the plates. I think the 1 series will be a classic in the same ways the E36 and E46 are classics. Maybe more because they are hard to find. Just because the car didn't sell well now doesn't mean people won't gain interest later. People's tastes change.

Exactly. I can imagine owners arguing in the late '70s about the potential future collectibility of their 1976 Ford Mustang II T-Top Cobra hatchbacks…

As far as 135is's go, yours will be far more in demand than mine… 6MT vs. DCT, black interior w/blue stitching vs. Oyster, etc. Of course, we didn't buy our cars to sit on them for 20 years… I'm enjoying the hell out of mine every day!!!

The small car with the big engine, stick shift and sport package will always appeal to hard core enthusiasts and rarely have trouble finding a new home. I'm keeping mine.

You can't determine a classic by number made. If you made 1000 of one car and there are 800 left, it won't be as special as if you made 10000 of another car and there's only 50 left. What makes a classic is having a group of people love it. There were thousands and thousands of 60s muscle and pony cars made, but it's still something special when you see one drive by. I'm not saying the 1 series will be a classic next week, but in 10 to 20 years, the 1er will be rare enough to take a second look when one drives by.

A good one will be especially rare if it ever goes through what the 3 goes through. It happened to the E30, and E36 and will happen to the E46 eventually. It becomes cheap enough that "cool bros" buy it because it's so awesome and they ruin a lot of them with their terrible taste and worse driving.

I remember my dad took me to the BMW dealership to cross shop between the 320is and a Saab 900 Turbo. I fell in love with the BMW. So sexy compared to the awkward Saab looks. He ultimately bought the Saab because it was faster and he liked the unique looks. I grew to love the uniqueness of the Saab, I bought a used SPG in the early 90's(Thats a classic) but I always wanted a 320is. Take good care of her!

Nice ride! In my opinion that is a classic, albeit an under appreciated one. Simple, light, direct, fun. They don't make 'em like that anymore. Classic.

A 2011 135 coupe with a nice load of options is worth about $23000-25000 here. What did they go for new? I think the base MSRP was around $36000 before options.

Don't know about your neck of the woods, but it's already happening here. Plenty of E46's with hideous "dubs" and "special, custom" paintjobs, among other "tasteful" mods. The same crowd has already taken over the E65's too.

---edit---
And by here, I mean DFW. Just saw that you're from Texas too lol.
