Should I sell the beloved 1?

Okay, Here is my situation... I currently live in Central Illinois and DD a 135i. It's the best car I have ever owned and can't ask for more. Having said that, I'll likely be moving to the Minneapolis area soon due to a job opportunity. I am concerned about daily driving a 135i in this area due to the amount of snow fall. The car does have snow tires mounted during the winter time and I have had no issues in the past winters in Central Illinois.

My question is... should I keep her as a daily once I move? Or should I get a car that's better in more snowy area? Anyone live in MN/ND/SD/WI have thoughts to share?

Thanks! G

Living here for 20 years, driving for almost all of them, my short answer is - no worries.

We plow the roads here. I don't mean to be... whatever that might sound like. It's just that the snow thing - yeah we get a lot, but it doesn't (normally, LOL) all come at once and the plows are out as soon as it begins.

Get some good snow tires, you'll be OK.

That said I still drive my truck more often than not, because 4x4 > 2WD, whether it be front or rear. But as cars go, RWD w/ snow tires will be OK.

If nothing else, give it a shot for a year, then trade for a Subaru or something else next year if you decide you really need to.

The only thing that would make me hesitate is if I parked my car on the street. Plowing isn't exactly the quickest affair here in Milwaukee but once they do plow it can be a nightmare to get cars out of spaces if they aren't all wheel drive.

With that said I've lived with a front wheel drive, a rear wheel drive and now an all wheel drive car in Milwaukee and haven't had any problems. I've always parked in a garage and generally haven't been afraid to go out in the snow, even on all seasons. If you grow up around snow and have any sense about you then it generally isn't that difficult to manage.

I hope you kept the 1! I have lived in Minneapolis for 10 years, and have had a DD 135 for about 2 years now. With snow tires, it is better than the Mazda 3 I had before. This pic taken in 2010 - pretty mean machine in the snow.

Ya... I ended up trading mine in for a Jetta Wagen TDI. Kinda disappointing as I pulled into my new work last Monday, the first car that I saw was a 135i, haha~ That was after the big snow storm of 14+ inches.

A 135i to a TDI Jetta...wagon? Very drastic change.

I drove to Minnesota during that snowstorm, and was immediately tempted to try to trade it for a 335xi or an Audi...

Ya, very drastic indeed... During the relocation process, I realized I really need a bigger car. I spend a fair share of my time outdoors cycling, camping and such so that's why I decided on a wagon. With my folks in Chicagoland, I decided on TDI as I will be visting them often. Its too bad that Audi A3 TDI doesn't come in a manual in the US, or else that wouldn't have gone that route.

Anyway, so far no regrets... just miss the power and sound. I'm hopeful in a couple of years, I'll buy a second car dedicated for summer weekend driving and autoX.

Actually, given that, I'd say you made a great choice.
