Highways with no speed limit?

I have heard Nevada and Montana have highways with no speed limits. Where else in North America are you legally allowed to open up the 1 series without the threat of a $1,000 speeding ticket? I don't think there is a Province in Canada that has no posted speed limit.

Nope - Montana had a 'reasonable and prudent' for awhile, but that's gone IIRC.

All the roads I've been on in Nevada have limits (granted I've not been on all of them - but some that are off the beaten path). I know that there are some closed road 'no-limits' racing events that take place in Nevada, usually pretty expensive to participate (wreck or no-wreck ; -).

That is one of the advantages of doing ED. While I will not have put enough miles on the car to be completely through the break-in, I will have gone far enough in my opinion to be able to hit top speed at least a couple of times.

What do you think the natural top speed of the 135i will be with the Dinan tune (the speed limiter is taken off with the Dinan)? I am also planning to lower the car, making it more stable at speed.

170? WOW!

Viper - At that speed you will be eating up the highway at 250 feet every second. Make sure there aren't any armadillo's crossing the road 1/4 mile or so ahead of you! You will have less than 2 seconds to see them and react in time to avoid wiping them and possibly yourself out.

Well all I know is the demo I drove got to the 135mph electronic limiter real fast, cannot believe they allow a 135i out the door without the sports package.

And for the year or two that Montana had R&P, there were signs posted saying "Yes, Virginia, Montana has a speed limit." Which meant that the cop who decided your speed wasn't reasonable or prudent could ticket you on that basis alone!

Actually, the last time I drove Rt. 50 across Nevada, I saw little law enforcement - but the road surface was a bit dicey for anything much over 90.

Yes.. I heard of Montana implementing speed limits. I'm curious to know the answer to this question as well. Since, as the OP mentioned, there are none in Canada.

There are no public roads in the US without speed limits now (75mph max). Any state that tries to go their own way is quickly deprived of Federal Highway funds - sad state of affairs.

Other than Germany, the Isle of Man in the UK has no limits and some parts of Australia too (not sure if that's still the current situation there).

I lived in the Northern Territory (Australia) for around 12 years. There was no absolute speed limit in the Northern Territory before 1 January 2007 but maximum speed limits are posted on some road sections. Drivers were simply required to drive at a safe speed to suit the conditions. Thus the majority of the Stuart Highway had no speed limits at all. The Northern Territory traffic laws were updated from 1 January2007to be similar to the rest of Australia. This included placing a speed limit on all roads (130 km/h [81 mph] on major highways such as the Stuart Highway) and significantly increasing penalties for speeding.

Cannonball Run

In 1994 the first and only Cannonball Run in Australia ran from Darwin to Yulara and back again. Based on similar events in the United States, this event ended in tragedy when a Ferrari F40 crashed into a checkpoint south of Alice Springs, resulting in the death of four people (one of whom was a good friend of my mother). The remainder of the race had to have a 150 km/h (93 mph) speed limit imposed to prevent further accidents, and then had regular traffic overtake the competitors.

Another interesting fact about the Northern Territory is that it has the highest incidence of unlicensed drivers in the world...

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limit for info on speed limits around the world.

cozza - Speaking of Cannonball Baker, I was browsing through my collection of Automobile Quarterly mags earlier today and ran across the REDeX trials that used to be held in Australia - do those still get mentioned?

Has Texas lost their Federal funds since they raised the limit to 80 on a couple of western TX rural interstates?

The old REDeX trials, even I'm too young to remember them, but my mum has told me all about them. She used to rally drive an MGB and a Honda S600 in the 60's and 70's, but crashed both before I was born, damnit!

The trials only ran for a few years in the 1950's. Would have been a tough time to drive around this huge country of ours in those days, especially without aircon! Average speeds were only around 30mph.

Check out this video: http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au...redex_1954.htm

There's some more info here:

Not to mention all the damn deer! I drove my RV across Montana at night and I was terrified I was going to hit a deer. I saw over 50 carcusses on the side of the road that night. I was only doing my top speed of 60MPH and was paying close attention. I'm not sure I'd try a top speed run there. A deer at that speed could total a 135.

Although not "legal", if you take I15 through Utah, Arizona, Nevada there are some 100+ mile straights through the desert with no people, cars, cops, animals, etc. Several years ago I had my old Tiburon out there running around 137 mph for a long time before I even passed someone going the other direction.

About 10 years ago I was driving in southeastern Oregon, in a part of the state that has almost no one in a very large area (1 person per square mile sort of place) and I was driving a rented Mustang at 10:00 or so at night at well in excess of 100 MPH when suddenly there was a cow in the middle of the road. They don't use fences out there and fortunately the there was enough room and the cow didn't have enough time to react and I was able to make it around the cow, but it seriously changed how I drive in that part of the state.

I'm sure someone will reprimand me for writing this...but....
When i moved back east from CA i took a route through Nevada and up through Idaho and Montana. At the time i had a c4s and ran over 150mph for 4-5 mins at a time and once hit an indicated 182mph. After a few days of running hard and sight seeing i let my girlfriend drive (first time in the c4s). She got pulled after only 5 minutes for going 90 in a 55, cop gave her a warning and said to slow it down b/c there was a town nearby.
Another time i made a night trip to Vegas from SF...normally this takes about 9 hours but we somehow managed to do this in a little over 6. no traffic in the desert and a valentine1 helped....
I've since cut down drastically on the speed, a wreck and some age will do that to you...
careful out there
