ozone deodorizing
do those ozone machines really work at getting odors out of interiors?
i bought my car used and has a slight smoke odor. I shampooed the whole car including the trunk and floor mats. and cleaned/conditioned the leather. I even leave the sunroof vented during the day. the odor has gotten better but not 100% gone. |

They work a bit, but consider that ozone is basically a molecule consisting of 3 oxygen elements. Oxygen typically travel in 2s. The extra oxygen molecule wants to break off and attach to other molecules which in turn changes the molecular structure of the odor molecule. The same "free radical" oxygen element which destroys the odor molecules can also damage other items in your car. Namely plastics, carpets and the insulation on wiring. It will also cause unprotected metal surfaces to oxidize (i.e. rust). The ozone generating units that plug into your cigarett lighter don't generate enough ozone to do much. A professional ozone generator can produce a significant amount of ozone, especially if placed in the confined space of a car. With all the electronic equipment in our cars, I personally wouldn't use a professional ozone generator. But that's just me.

^ +1...try to find some Crystal gel (natural odor eliminator) to stick under your seat. No matter what it will just take time to get rid of the smoke smell. GL.

Hydrogen Peroxide is formed when ozone dissolves in moisture. And this is what happens when it comes into contact with moisture in your eyes, nose and lungs. Ozone can also perish rubber and some plastics. Water (H2O) and Ozone (03) react to create Oxygen (02) and together form Peroxide (H2O2) which will bleach materials it comes in contact with.

A friend bought a smokers car. He preformed a similar process as you. He found a smoke removing spray and sprayed the interior roof liner. I recal he said he sprayed it and then wiped it clean and the cloth ended up yellow from the nicotene. He wiped it several times before it wiped clear. The spray he used ws from a car store and was an interior cleaner that said it would help remove smoke smell. Maybe some of the Frebreze might do the trick? The car he bought was only about 2 years old but it sure did stink. It did take a few months after that till the smell was totally gone.
