BMW 128i Coolant. (What are you running?)

What is the capacity for our cooling system?

What brand of coolant is everyone running? BMW? Prestone?

Are people replacing the drain plugs from the radiator since they have rubber O-rings? or just reusing them?

Using Distilled or Demineralized water(if not using 50/50 premix)?

Uh, did you try searching for the answers to your questions?

I know others have asked the same...

Yes I have, the answers vary. Perhaps you could provide a link?

It was also just a general question, I was just curious what everyone was running.

Agreed. BMW fluid is as good as anything else available, plus distilled water is the only way to go.

While on the topic, does anybody have to top off their coolant once every 6 months or so? I've had to top it off twice since i got the car in july 2011. No leaks anywhere. I plan on sending an oil analysis on my next change to black stone but the motor doesn't show any signs of burning coolant.

I added maybe a a cup of distilled water one time to top it off and about half a liter the second time. I'm waiting on BMW coolant to come so i can offset the amount of distilled water i added.

I have found that it's not uncommon among e9x's but figured i'd ask here and see if anybody else notices it.

The cooling system is self contained, so disappearing coolant means either a leak somewhere in the cooling system or a head gasket problem. There's literally nowhere else for it to go.

Then again, if the last time you had an issue was july 11, may be a slow enough leak that it doesn't need to be worried about (or it wasn't filled properly originally).

I got the car in july 2011, i topped it off probably 4-6 months after that figuring something with the previous owner since it wasn't much fluid missing. Thanksgiving day this year i put a about a .5L of water in and it's been fine since. It's not really much fluid disappearing, but any missing is enough to be concerned.

i've had to top off the coolant on our new 2013 X1. There was quite a bit missing. Seems to have stabilized since then. Read on the forums that i'm not the only one as far as the N20 engine goes.

The 128i is a 2010 CPO, bought a year ago. Checked coolant after 6 months and again after a year and no detectable loss...

Current standing theory is that new engines might have some air trapped in the cooling system that works itself off in the first months?

That would be super early for head gasket issues...

BMW genuine (blue) at about 50/50...I add about 100ml per 18,000 miles driven (one a year). coolant change every 50,000 miles, reuse the plug but probably will replace the plug at next change.

Black stone lab oil analysis will be the only way to tell i guess. e9x forums show me topping off the coolant here and there is normal.

I've read loads of threads/posts with people adding coolant. I guess its typical for the system to have some air in it. I added some coolant to the overflow tank around 22k. Next oil sample will go out to black stone laboratories in town, doubt it's anything to really worry about.

It is common for the M54 to sip a bit, but I certainly wouldn't assume it is normal.
