trouble getting into first gear.
Lately i have been having some trouble engaging first gear. I have an 08' 135i with 97k miles 6mt. Sometime after stopped i try putting the car into first and it doesn't engage all the way. I have to release the clutch a couple inches for it to go in. It has been happening a couple times a day.
Anyone else experiencing this? Maybe i need to change tranny fluid? |

When is the last time you did a brake fluid flush?

Happens to me as well. It like its a few mm's short of fully engaging, and if I launch with it short it has popped the gear out before. Some times I have to go 1st (not engaged) 2nd, then back to first T_T

Try this the next time it happens... with your foot on the clutch(DOWN)... and your right hand trying to put the shift lever into first gear(but it won't go in!)... with your "other hand" switch off the engine while trying to put the car into 1st gear with your foot down on the clutch.
IF the shift lever goes into 1st gear as the engine spins down... your clutch is bad/worn. Its not releasing. You shouldn't drive too long like this... bc this is very hard on your transmission internals. G.L.

That has happened to me many times before. It's completely random but I don't feel as if anything is wrong. This is on my current car.

took my car to two dealers. First one couldn't replicate the problem, second dealer is telling my clutch and bearing is bad? This doesn't make a lot of sense to me as my clutch was replaced at 40k according to the SA under warranty. (I bought the car with 78k btw). This has been my 5th manual trans car.
Going to try changing the fluid this weekend and see if that fixes the problem. |

^^IF you guys continue to drive your car(s) like this with the clutch not working properly... your gonna need a new trans sooner rather than later. Put a new clutch in the car now - your clutch(s) aren't working!!

I agree with Dack, if the clutch isnt engaging properly and you can trace it to the part, id suck it up and replace it. The trans on the 1 is pretty bulletproof, youd hate to blow it down the road over a bad clutch. Thatll cost $$

i experience the exact same thing 1-2 times a day...did the 1st-2nd-1st move, that works, but my theory is that the fluid is cold and doesnt want to engage 1st but 2nd is easier because the ratio is different (idk the details about this, just a theory)...i found that the more I drive, the easier it is to get 1st to engage...
on a second note... I always park my car in 1st gear with the handbrake on...does anyone think that this is linked to the "sticky" 1st gear issue? Im going to start using 3rd from now on and see if this goes away... |

Thats what I was going to say. Seems a bit worse when its cold. Mine doesn't pop out of gear though, just tough to get into first sometimes. Instead of forcing it into first I will go to second then it slides right into first. FWIW, my car is only at 38k miles.

And no... its not because your using 1st gear when you park the car. Your problem - putting the car in 1st gear is because of your clutch! The clutch is seizing on the splines. Only fix is a new clutch.

ive never "ground" 1st gear or missed a gear before...as it is a brand new car, 6 months old, its funny that I have the same issues as those with 40k miles on their cars...any ideas about that? I do drive every day, city driving, but i do push the car hard when i get the chance

dack, with the handbrake on on a flat space, im not worried about it being rolled away in 3rd but i may use 2nd or reverse just to see if it makes a difference

It has only came out of gear the first couple times when I didn't know what was going on. Trying to move while it is not all the way engaged I would assume that's hat would happen. I would never think it would be a bad clutch issue though. The car never grinds the gears regurdless of how I am driving.

I have had this happen a couple times. It's fairly rare (1 to 2 times a week at most). It honestly doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.... it only happens after I have put it in neutral from 3rd or higher gear. I figured it's the synchros taking a sec to catch up. I usually go into 2cd before first just to make sure everything has stopped spinning anyway.

Did this ever get resolved? I am reviving this because I have a similar issue.
My issue: Sometimes car won't go into 1st gear, even when the car is driven for a while, so I don't think the cold fluid is my issue. Putting the car into second first usually works. Sometimes I have to put it into second 2 or 3 times and then it goes right into 1st no issues. 1st never pops out, this is just getting it into gear. After it is in gear, it stays there. Any ideas or thoughts?
