Broken Serpentine Belt

Well I had a lovely night. It started out with me going out to pick up a pizza when unexpectly the battery light came on and my power steering was gone. The car still ran fine but I still pulled over to the side and pop the hood to check on things. I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary but someone smelled like burning rubber a little bit. So I decided to just keep going and just manage to drive the car without the power steering working properly just to pick up the pizza since I'm schedule an appointment to bring the car in today for the driver's window, headlamp that was out and for the adaptive headlamp system was not working. I'm at a stop light and when it turned green I pull away from the light as I get through the intersection I just heard all this noise under the hood like the serpentine belt broke and sounded like I was running it over too. I quickly pull over and pop the hood again and shine my phone with the LED flashlight on it and sure enough the belt snapped and was shredded up pretty good. The car is a 2011 with only 7500 miles on it. I couldn't believe I had a belt snap at 7500 miles. It's almost unheard of to me. I've never once snapped a belt on any of my cars. So I ended up calling roadside assistance and they had a tow truck out to me in about 60-70 minutes. I'm curious to know what caused the belt to snap like it did. I'll be sure to keep you guys updated after I talk to the dealer.

I did have it running maybe for like 2-3 minutes max since the problem happened shortly after that. I only had to go maybe 4-5 miles to get the pizza and had the AC on for the first 3 minutes I was on the road. That's interesting to know. I just was in kinda shock to know it was the belt after I pulled over.

The only belts I've replaced on a BMW were the 2 serpentine belts on my '99 E46 328i - done "just in case" at 60k miles.

Definitely let us know what caused the failure.

Well I got off the phone with the dealer about an hour ago. They been busy this morning so they haven't gotten it in the shop yet but they will right after lunch break. Hopefully I can get a loaner cause he said they might need to order parts depending on what caused the belt issue. I technically have 2 other cars but one of them is just a show car with Antique Vehicle plates which I can't really be driving around and my SRT4 is down at the moment since I'm replacing the turbo on it.

I just got a call back from the dealer. It looks like one of the pulleys broke off which caused the belt to break. I'll find out more on which pulley. My car won't be ready until Monday so I can get a loaner they said. Going be leaving soon to pick it up. I wonder what the the loaner will be.

I talked more with my advisor and he said it was the idler pulley that broke and took out the serpentine belt with it. I should have the car back on Monday. For now they gave me a 2011 335i for a loaner. It's really nice to and the color I believe looks like Space Gray. I had a choice between the 335i and the 335d.

I can't help it. I'm really enjoying this 335i for the weekend. It's not bad just wish it was a manual.

Just got a call from the dealer for an update and looks like the car won't be ready today. They got the pulley parts today and had them installed so the car runs but they are still getting check engine lights popping up. They said there is a BMW techincal support case on that which is called the fasa data he said not sure if I spelled it right but I spelled it how it sounded from the voicemail. Also my adaptive headlamp system is messed up so they have to order a new FMR module which won't be in until tomorrow. I'll keep updating this thread once I get another update. I might ask him about my car getting that DME update since I'm curious if it needs it or not. The car is a 4/10 build.

The latest update now is that my car is still being worked on. The dealer is still waiting to hear back from BMW techinical support. They also told me the car is making a weird sound from the engine and hoping the motor isn't messed up. As for the headlamps they didn't get the FMR module in yesterday so my car won't be ready for a few days he said so I'm going to continue driving the 335i xDrive.

For reference:

BMW Tech Support is = PUMA hotline

It is not FASA data, But FASTA Data.. this is the information that thru diagnosis is taken from your car and Engineering can "read" it, "see" it, etc etc. There are many things that Engineering can "see" but a Dealer cannot.

If the belt broke and wrapped around the crank pulley behind it, there is a chance that eithe the seal is messed up ( does not need to leak to be messed up) or the crank pulley has spun on the crank. they are press fit so it is possible..

Yeah I couldn't make out what he said if it was FASA or FASTA. haha I spoke with the dealer about 2 hours ago and he said the FMR module is in the car now and being programmed. As for the sound it ended up being that chunks of the belt got stuck in the seal behind the harmonic balancer and they will be ordering a new seal which they should have tomorrow along with a new harmonic balancer since the pulley manage to damage the rubber around the harmonic balancer. I will be excited to get my car back on Friday since the dealer my car is at will take me at least 45-60 minutes to get to in rush hour traffic by the time I get out of work tomorrow. I miss driving manual so bad. I don't think I want to know how much all this work would have costed if the car wasn't still under warranty.

I guess i win the boobie prize!! having guessed correctly that is..

Im gonna add another guess and you not gonna like it... Dont hate me, but im betting that you wont get car back tomorrow.. that seal is a PITA.. espically just getting the bolt off for the pulley.. FYI IIRC the torque on that bolt is like xxx Ft lbs ( alot) and then 1 FULL revolution !!!! Thats tight my friend... Ill put money on the fact you get your car before the week end.
Enjoy the 335... put it in sport mode and bump shift all day..youll have fun.

Regards

As long as the car gets fixed right I don't mind if it's not ready for pickup today. I have been using the sport mode and bump shifting it when I drive. I don't like how it normally shifts. It feels like a lags a bit and drives better in sport mode. A friend of mine has a 2010 135i and had to have both turbo's replaced under warranty and he took the 335d and said it was awesome to drive especially having 400ft lbs of torque.

Well the car ended up not being ready yesterday. They are still having issues with the adaptive headlamps. They were taking it for a drive yesterday after installing the new harmonic balancer and front crankshaft seal and were still getting error codes for the adaptive headlamps so they went ahead and order an entire headlamp assembly and hope that does the trick. So it should be done today unless they continue to get error codes still on the car.

I finally got my car back yesterday. They got everything running good on Friday and took it for a drive but were still having issues with the AHL system so they ordered me a new headlamp assembly and everything was good by yesterday at the end of the day. I talked with my advisor about my car receiving the DME update or if it didn't need it and my car was a 4/10 build and just was curious and he said my car most likely had the latest update on it when it was built. This morning I turned off the DSC competely off and noticed my triangle icon has changed to the car with the tires tracks behind it so I'm guessing my car got the DME update while it was in the shop. The car drives about the same but there's a slightly better throttle response in the upper rpm range I noticed when I was passing a 18 wheeler this morning.

So, I wonder what all that work would have cost outside of warranty?
