I think this is the one example where we need bigger pictures to see what you're talking about. How reputable is your indie mechanic though?

Several years ago, I took my Lotus Elise to the dealer for a repair on something (can't recall what). It had recently gone out of warranty. The dealer called me to say "this car is all over the road - the front struts need to be replaced." The car only had something like 5000 miles on it! I said "well, if they need to be replaced, you need to call Lotus, because you guys replaced them, under warranty, just 1500 miles ago." Silence on the other end. Then, he said "I'll check on it, and call you back."
Miraculously, they then determined that the problem wasn't the struts after all - it was a "tire inflation issue." I told them that I had checked the tires before I brought it in, and they were fine. I also told them that "if it was the tires, you should have checked that before telling me I needed new struts." Can you say, "scam artists"?
