I really could not feel much of a Hp gain in my car with the N55 mids. Infact I am fairly sure under 2,500 rpms it made LESS Hp. But at the upper rev's it sure did SCREAM!! but that kind of got old for me.

All along I was looking for a poor-mans PE. I ended up spending close to $500 for nothing. And in the end... I bought a Performance Exhaust... and never regreted doing so. THE PE is sooooo good to me ears. Quiet at part throttle yet perfectly loud at WOT. And people who follow me(other 135i owners & 1M woners) always tell me how GOOD my exhaust sounds. Im glad to took the plunge. Best money spent on my car.

I feel the same way about the Performance exhaust. One of the best, if not the best thing I've done for my car.

No downpipes, and no noises coming from the wastegate either. I think I have a leak somewhere though with this random smoke once in awhile. I have an oil change saturday so maybe they can find something.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't get the n55 mid-pipe that I first saw, but I got the section 1 and section 2 n-54 mid-pipes from Supersprint, sold by Turner. I already had Active Auto cat-less downpipes and their charge-pipe with a BOV (cool sounds!) and the bigger intercooler, which all gave me a great jump in power, (about 30 hp), but when I went to the new mid-pipes I think I got another 10-15!! Only problem was the smell and smoke. I put back part of the OEM midpipe with the secondary cats and the problem went away. Now I am waiting for a Corsa PE muffler and hope I get the same great sound as you!

Great info on this thread guys! I bought the BMW PE, had the dealer install it on my 135i N55 (as it was only an hour labor) a week ago- while I love the sound of the new Y-pipe and muffler combo (especially under WOT)., I just found it a bit too loud during a cold start...when I fire up the car in my parking garage at work it's just too much. Using the advice on this thread -,I put my old N55 resonator and pipes back on (using the clamps provided in the kit) and it's just the right volume for my taste.

I'll probably sell the PE Y-pipe now -- Any thoughts on a fair price for a week old part (hard to judge since the part isn't sold separately)....thanks!

The PE Y-pipes seem to fetch around ~$175 to $200. Throw up an add with pics(!) and see who bites. You should have little trouble selling it.

Mid-Pipes and new muffler

Okay,
After taking off the Supersprint cat-less mid-pipe and putting the OEM back on, the smell went away but so did the awesome sound. So I decided on the Corsa Performance muffler. Just got it back yesterday. Sounds deep at idle, real nice on acceleration, and the best part, there is NO drone on highway driving. Good sounds but quiet on the street when not WOT. Still sounds better than my cat-less mid-pipes. Of course with my cat-less Downpipes, performance intercooler, and cold air intake I have so much power I can only go full throttle when I take it to the track and now I can keep up with the previously faster M3's and the Caymans. Looks good too.

FYI: I'd recommended only torquing the clamping sleeves to around 20ft lbs....they have 45nm stamped on them which is 33ft lbs, but that was too tight at that setting for me as I crushed the clamps a bit! Had to order new ones and I also used some assembly paste and now I'm leak-free!

I went N55 mids last week, paired with my PE (no y-pipe), sound out of the PE is great but with the cat delete definitely more aggressive. Volume, burps and garbles are increased, I also found my cabrio picks up is now faster. Most likely from less back pressure of the cat delete.

Interested in putting n55 mids on my n54. Where is the cheapest place to buy them nowadays?

Any dealer is the best place. Find one that will give you a good price. I bought mine locally bc of the shipping and I did not want to deal with a damaged part. You will also need the dp gaskets(2) and probably new ss bolts bc your old dp studs will snap off from rust.

But like I said... I really was kind of disappointed by the N55 mids. I am so much happier now with my PE(Performance Exhaust). Its what I should have done, a long - long time ago!

Thanks! I've already got a Berk race axleback. I'm happy with the sounds just want a bit more burbles in the exhaust note.

The N55 mids don't give you a ton of burbles. A few yes. Its mostly more VOLUME at WOT and more rasp at part throttle. At least that was my impression. I also felt that bellow 2,500 rpm's the engine lost a few Hp but gained a little above 5.500 rpm's.

I think IF your after more burbles get the PPK tune and or add a Y-pipe to delete the mid pipe's resonator.

Ok, so I went fully catless a couple days ago. Meaning my secondary cats are deleted as well as my resonator w/Performance Exhaust. But after my initial drive, the rasp is just too much and cold starts are super loud. So I was going to buy the n55 mids w/resonator. Will this cut down a lot of my rasp?

I think I would reinstall your N54 mid pipe with cats. The rear resonator does cut down on some of the rasp - but I felt the secondary cats do more to make the car quieter while cruising.

Unfortunately the previous owner cut out the secondary cats and welded in straight pipes so I don't have them. But I found another solution, bought 2 Vibrant resonators and will get them welded in the midpipe. Thanks Dack

I have a BMW PE with Y-Pipe on N54 and stock N54 midpipes. I love it, but want a little more scream at WOT.

Basically for anyone who is familiar with my combo, I want it to sound like it does currently when cold under acceleration all the time. Which is a loud, quite raspy (but not Honda like) scream

Will either gutted N54 midpipes or N55 mids achieve this?

Hey guys, I didn't mind the cold starts but everyone else did and since I will be throwing on catless DP, I was starting to worry. Recently I picked up MHD Flasher and it has an option to cut down the noise during starts. Basically by keeping the RPM around 400-500 after 1/2 a second. It is a noticeable difference.

If you have n54 midpipes this is a must upgrade in my opinion. I was running a berk street exhaust and once I added the n55 midpipes was when the exhaust really starting to make some noise. It was like the n54 midpipes had a silencer on it.

The N55 mid pipes do make more noise(just not music to my ears) but part of the reason why I removed them from my N54 135i was bc I felt like I lost some torque down low in the rev range. I'd say by 3,500 rpms they were making more power(& lots of noise)... but I just did not feel like it was the "right" kind of noise. Now that I have my Performance Exhaust installed on my car(with cats & N54 mids/secondary cats) I feel that the performance exhaust IS music to my ears. I love my PE. I should have just bought it from the start instead of wasting $400 on the N55 mids. But a lot of people like the N55 mids on their N54 cars - so what do I know.

dandandan asked me in a PM about the spring clamp bolts at the rear of the mid pipe. I thought I would post some pics of my car's spring bolts bc they are a real pain in the butt when reassembling the exhaust.

I would recommend to buy new springs(#11, #12 & #13 in the RealOEM.com image bellow), and bolts and even the round metal exhaust gasket when changing your mid pipe or installing a PE. The springs and bolts aren't really cheap... but when you reuse the old ones they feel(and sometimes DO!) feel like they will break - when you get some pressure on those springs. Just FYI guys.
