My Mother and my Mother in law both have Holden Cruzes.
My Mother in law's is the 1.8 petrol and the combination of this engine, the super tall gearing of the auto trans and the tuning for ecconomy at all costs adds up to unbelievably lack luster performance. My mother has the 2.0 diesel which is also coupled to the same tall geared auto however the diesel's prodigious 320Nm of torque means that it is fairly spritely though the turbo lag off idle is legendary I recently drove my Mother's car from Melbourne to Canberra and return and I discovered that the tranny doesn't change into 6th gear until about 105km/h at which point the engine sits on about 1400 rpm at 110! Great economy though with an average of 5.4l/100km. All being said though, I think the 1.4 turbo would be the pick of the drive trains. Interior of the cars is very spacious with leather and really powerful heated seats. Aircon is not lacking either (I think that's pretty much always the case for cars that are heavily engineered for Australian conditions - and often a bit of a downfall of Eruro's). Interior quality is commensurate with the price but really not too bad (I wouldn't consider the 1er's interior to be anything special either). In general, I think you get a lot of car for your money.

Forget the Cruze. Toyota have the perfect car for you and it's name is Camry. They even have a "sport" model. BYO cardigan.

On a more serious note, I'd recommend a 2010 Mazda3 Diesel! 110kw and 360nm, 5.7L/100kms!
Demos can probably be bargained down to low-mid $20's This is what I'd consider if I was in the OP's situation. |

My turn, Polo GTi.
IF you can get one, low $30s, quick tunable and will hold value.... Guaranteed! 5's on a trip and 7s around town, euro quality and the new "cult" of small cars. I pick one up next week from one of our car gods here on the forum, Way. |

I'm keeping the 135i! It is true that i no longer care so much about having a high performance car and therefore my next car will be more 'normal'.......but this car is just too damn nice to get rid of so soon!

Yeh well my fatherinlaw drives a toyota, so add that to the list of cars for PENSIONERS
Why (and remember this is a BMW forum) would we not recommend a second hand BMW, say a late 90's 328...... gotta get change for 10k i'd thought and still a very good car But all this cruze, toyota and VW talk is gonna bring some real bad karma imo |
