Hard to believe all these young people driving BMWs.

I didn't have enough money till my 40s to buy fancy cars and even then it started with just an MX5, which isn't all that fancy. It was however a car I had lusted after for 12 long years since they first appeared in 1989, and that was mainly because of their resemblance to the Lotus Elan which I had lusted after since I saw one on the Avengers ( no not the Marvel Avengers you late comers ) with Diana Rigg playing Emma Peel at the wheel. Come to think of it Diana Rigg was something else I lusted after. If you are now considering what number of advanced years I may be bear in mind this mitigating factor - I watched the Avengers as reruns in the early seventies, not when they were first made in the sixties.

I think what has changed, and not saying that this is the forum trend for the younger members, is priorities..

Growing up, my number one priority was purchasing real estate/ then a realestate investment and then nice motor vehicle. Nowadays, kids will stay with their parents longer and drive nicer cars..
Not saying this wrong, but this seems to be the trend.

My gym carpark looks like a European car lot.. Yet most of these kids live at home, and their car is their No1 investment..

As a fellow OF I have to agree. For me it was primarily the acquisition of the first house, followed by a business in my chosen profession, investment properties (helps to offload in the '06 boomtime), upgrade to the dream house THEN the nice cars.

Horses for courses but I believe my generation traded dreams for security.

Oh did I mention...then you have kids and it all goes to sh*t .

Tell me about it! Picked up a 3 bed 2 bath apartment for $199k - sold it for $400k twelve months later in Sept '06. Then the capital gains hit comes later but hey, what a return!

I have noticed this more and more over the last say 5-10 years.
Cultural differences notwithstanding, there's a generation gap going on here in relation to moving out of home or living with your parents into adulthood.

I moved out of home when I was 18 years old and it was not a day too soon. I could not wait to leave the family nest. It was unequivocally a cause of shame to live at home if you were finished highschool and had a job.

To live at home when you were say 20 would be tantamount to being a total failure. To be on the dole would be the equivalent. It was like admitting to the world you were a total loser who was so useless you still relied on mummy and daddy to feed you and wipe your arse.

To live with your parents when you were say 25 or older would be equivalent to being a disabled person.

These days that has changed. There is no such sense of shame. Adolescence has extended into the mid thirties.

There are people out there who have held a well paid job and developed career for ten years who have never lived out of their family home. Arrested development? I guess it depends on your viewpoint.

To us old buggers anyone who claims to be a grownup who does not live in a place they pay for with their own income,. make their own decisions about life and basically know there is no backstop ... is not really a grownup. Just a brat playing at being an adult.

To a sophisticated Gen Yer who has completed a degree, got themselves a god job and worked their way up their career path for ten years and yet choses to remain at home, us old buggers are like pensioners who refused to use an ATM because it's new-fangled.

Don't forget old buggers, these people have never experienced a world without mobile phones, internet or e-commerce. IT's a completely different place to what we grew up in.

I don't totally agree to this viewpoint. Life is short. You can get hit by a bus any day. Enjoy life while you can, you are dead a long time!

Yes there is a balance between financial responsibility and enjoying yourself. No, you can't take any of it with you if you drop off the perch before plan.

But then again, being self employed since I was 25 and now sitting on 51, I have had to self fund my superannuation for the twilight years..

So putting it away for a rainy day is a absolute must.. I haven't got rich parents to fall back on or a chunky inheritance in the pipeline..

Like amk2912 , I also have 2 houses and a commercial property in the Sydney CBD, which will hopefully keep my misses in the lifestyle she is accustomed too once we decide enough is enough and sell the gym ...

Hmmm... whilst I agree with some of what Kenny has said, it is not black and white.

Back in the 'old days', anyone could move out at 18 and survive. Anyone could purchase a house after working for a few years. And that's why the baby boomers and Gen Xers have screwed things up for Gen Yers. They own the wealth, and the property. Which means Gen Yers have to save a lot longer to afford a house. Let's not even take into account the cost of living is so much more than it was 20+ years ago.

I think what Richard is trying to say is that the generation Xers have F$%#ED the generation Yers.

My old man bought every house on our street back in the late 80's early 90's and everyone thought WTF is this guy doing. He ended up sub-dividing all of them as it was so easy back then and built twice the amount of houses on the street and sold a few and rented out the rest. He still owns most of them and is reaping the rewards now.
