Maybe the previous owner misunderstood.

It's once every 5,000 miles.

Not 5 oil changes in 5,000 miles !!!!

Now that is just plain crazy. Our cars have a relatively big oil sump and LL-01 approved oil is top notch. I can see going 5-7,500 miles without issue. Going beyond that I think would greatly depend on your driving habits and weather conditions.

Well... I wanted to remove all the micro metal particles from the new engine. I've talked to an engineer friend of mine... and we both don't think changing the oil very frequently on a brand new engine - is quite ok. Now a days... I change the oil every 10K kms or once a year.

I think changing the oil more frequently as an engine breaks in is good practice (except on Hondas). UOA's I've seen on most vehicles show metal wear particles steadily decrease over time (with steady driving conditions). Changing it at three miles though is a complete waste.

Thank you. The $9000 price was the outside price of engine plus installation. Figured $3k labor and up to $6k for the engine. I'm seeing prices from $3500-5000, so hoping to come in on the lower end of the range. Just found LKQ, and will call them tomorrow.

Thinking I'm better off repairing than cashing out. Just paid this car off and don't want another payment, even as much as an M235i is calling my name.

Hell, could just be spun bearings. Not terribly uncommon just a pain in the ass. If you have a lift, you should be able to replace them without removing the engine (I've done this on other cars, never a BMW). It's a bit more of a PITA to pull the motor but then the bearing replacement is SUPER easy.

WAY cheaper than nine grand.

Oil is full of metal though, and is been so for a few weeks probably, measuring from when I first heard the sound. Isn't there a concern about the damage that would have done to the rest of the engine?

Do you trust your mechanic? Do you think he would screw you on something like this? I would think, having actual first hand knowledge of your vehicle, he could better diagnose your problem than someone over the internet. Wouldn't hurt to question him though more on his assessment of your engine (second opinion?).

I do feel good about him and trust him from everything I know. He does a lot of work on a wide range of cars, from brand-new ///M cars, which means people who prefer him over the dealer, to very used, and from cars like mine up to Ferraris. All that to say he seems to have a good reputation and following.

Hey, after stewing over it for a week now I'm thinking about selling. Are you seriously interested in buying? I have a posting on craigslist for $8900. Certainly negotiable and that's more than I expect to get.

My independent mechanic is very well regarded, and has not noted anything that seemed off about the car.

Honestly, there has always been what I called a slight rumble at 2000-2500 rpm when accelerating. This knocking noise is at the same rpm. I suspect that rumble was the warning re this failure.
Sounds to me like your engine threw a rod as the symptom is close to what you described. Was it a metallic knock that you describe at 2000-2500 rpm? If so, I'm perplexed that your mechanic did not notice.

Did you at any point get low oil pressure light or low oil while driving and turning the car? How many quarts of oil was in the pan when you drained it when you saw metallic shavings?

Sorry to hear your misfortune.

I wish you were in Socal, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Take a few days off work on top of a weekend and swap the engine. Easy money.

Never low oil while I had it, but I only had it for 13k of its 100k miles.

I think the problem started slow and accelerated quickly at the end. Became much more noticeable over just a day. It was a goner anyway whether the mechanic heard it or not.

Guy that bought the dead car made the engine swap and has it running great.

Meanwhile, I'm driving a Lexus now. Dying.

Glad everything worked out!

So just curious man, why the Lexus instead of another BMW?

Money. I just took a check to the bank for $15k to pay it off, then sold it for $7500 2 weeks later. Bought the Lexus at auction for $7000 all in.

I don't love the Lexus, but I'll say this for it: Had it in to Lexus for a recall. They gave me a 2017 IS350 to drive. Mine is a 2007 IS350 with 190k miles. I was expecting a monster. Well, the new one ran just like the old one. No loss in power or smoothness of the engine with all those miles, and the prior owner clearly did NOT take great care of it.

So, Lexus wins the longevity award. Doesn't hold a candle to the 135i's personality and fun though. I'll be back in a BMW ASAP.

Makes perfect sense! A 2012 falling apart like your 135i did is not acceptable, and I really hope BMW understands that quality is an important factor and steps it up in this regard. My 2013 128i has been rock solid, but my 2009 128i was literally at the dealer every month it seemed.

What BMW will be next on your list?

If money was no object, an M3 or M4. Realistically it'll be a used M235i or 335i M-Sport.

Can't go wrong with either of those...

I love the M235i...will probably be my next car when my warranty is up...probably a 2015 or 2016 if the price is right
