Yes, it's perfectly clever. It is best to have a square setup for winter tires, you want as narrow tires as you reasonably can get.

For winter you want 7j x 17" setup. 205/50R17's all around.
The reason is you want the narrowest and tallest tires to tackle the snow. Skinny tires give the tire more PSI (pounds per square inch) of pressure - bitting into the snow/ice. You don't want eight inch wide wheels bc this will change the tire patch foot print - for the worse for a winter setup. You want the narrowest wheels, so that is sevens. I think 17 x 7 ET35 will work with 205/50/17 on the front, but not j7.5 with ET35...I am not an expert, but I am looking at rims and winter tires as well.
