That's my point. It's not an m car so why does it have an m on the steering wheel and the shifter?

I'm disappointed in what the 1M turned out to be after all of the hype and anticipation
I have a 2008 135 MSport in my garage. Again...it's not a m car...it's just a trim package.

How can you be disappointed at this stage...the car hasn't even been unveiled yet.

Hey all new poster here.
I too have a 2008 135i with M badging on the steering wheel and shifter.
So while the M-Sport package may not have been available until 2009, I know the 2008 135's have some M badging on them.
Mine is a late model 2008 (Fall build and delivery).

I've owned an M car since 2001, starting with an e46 M3, after waiting for a year +, along with many others who submitted a deposit.

The excitement was the anticipation of innovation, advanced engineering. The M division did not disappoint, from the engine to the rear gears, from the overall styling to the puffed up hood and side gills. When BMW announced a 4.8 zero to 60 time, quicker than the existing M5, that was really over the top!!

Now I have an M Coupe. I am as happy with it as I was with the M3. It is mostly off the shelf parts, but they are M parts, example, the motor and the CSL brakes.

I would like to see an engine for the 1M that is specifically designed by M division for the One Series. If not, then an engine that is borrowed from one of the existing M cars, as is, or altered so it isn't too heavy for the 1M. If the 1M gets a turbo from the 135 / 335, it ought to be radically redesigned & show some innovative engineering before it gets an "M Power" badge. Yes, it will cost BMW time and money, but that is why the cars are so well respected.

BMW of course can and will do what it wants to do. I have nearly 3 years left on an Extended Warranty and will not part with my Z4 M Coupe to buy a 1M or any other M that seems to me outside the M tradition. I would probably buy some other BMW model.

I don't necessary think it is necessary to have an engine based on an existing ///M, if any of those engine is not going to do as good as a job as an engine in the other lineup as a base on the current 1er. However, I think you are right about it needs to be ///M modified to be worthy of an ///M power badge, and I think it is going to be the manifold. To me a spec up IS without any parts change on the engine itself is not worthy to be called ///1M, 135///M at best because of the track, suspension and LSD treatment.

I really do think that BMW will make the 1///M worthy of its name though.

+1 Fingers crossed... I also worry that if this car is too half-assed and seen as "not a real ///M car" that resale value will suffer and that enthusiasts will be constantly having to defend the car to those both in the BMW family and other marques. (If you're puffing your chest out right now and telling yourself that those things don't matter, you're full of $hit.)

I really hope that BMW doesn't screw this up as it will tarnish the ///M brand and the 1 series line. I believe in Dr. Kay. I hope I'm not being naive, but I really don't think they'll let something out the door that is less than stellar. The "no dogmas" thing scares me a bit though, as it sounds like a way for them to rationalize.

2700 worldwide ??
They really suck.
I'm really disappointed, there'll be no chance to get one 2nd-hand in a few years for a decent price.
Too bad.

Individual Options

David, will BMW North America authorize US buyers to use the BMW individual program? I know in NA it doesn't really exisit, but I know the E46 M3's and the E9x M3's have been purchased with the non standard colors and interiors.

Not sure if I believe ANY of that, but MT only? VERY doubtful, despite the rumors.

Doesn't matter to me: I'd rather save the $1.6k and work it myself. I just don't believe it. They're putting DCT in 335iS and 135i, why NOT in 1M?

3 pedals > 2 pedals, from a purist's point of view.

The 1m was meant to embody the type of car/driver connection that the e30 m3 offerd; I would assume they believe this connection to be most replicated through a 6 speed manual versus a dct transmission.

There will be no Individual program for the 1 Series M Coupe at all, even for the European market!! I know that because I have a good relationship with the folks in BMW M and Individual.

I wanted to order one in Frozen Grey in advance, but they informed me that they will not offer any Individual options for it because they will produce it in limited numbers in leipzig factory.

How do you know what the 1M was meant to embody?

People have mentioned this "pure M" thing.
What makes a "pure M"? What would make a "non pure M"?

I still say that M stands for Motorsport. and that a pure M only exists for homologation purposes. But hey that would mean that I just said 90% of M cars arent pure

That being said I really like how M appeals to the enthusiast. And anything thats a fun and tossable street car can also be considered an M IMO. That would include this 1M...even if its a parts bin car.

But im guessing that most people will disagree.

An engine without ITB's and without a power band that is meant for momentum driving on a racetrack.

I'm pretty sure I read it in the interview with Dr. Kegler, it's on the m-power website under the interview regarding the car.
