RFT Winter Tires or No?

Would it be better to run a RFT winter tires or not? How about with TPMS on it?
What size tires is best for winter set up?

I think so. Winter RFT with TPMS. That is what BMW recommends and 205 50 R17 is what you should run.

You could run 225 and 205's are better in snow as they are skinner. How much snow do you get?

I'm located in Maryland, and it varies how much snow we get in here.

as someone who has driven all my life in snow......yes there is truth to 'skinnier is better' for winter tires, BUT unless you want to squirrel around all winter with your rear tires scrounging around for grip, do NOT run 205s all around in a 135i, IMO.

the rear of the 135 needs at least 225s on it, IMO. You are not in a rally....you are on the street. The 'skinnier is better' logic is true, and there is some merit to it however everything is relative and unless you live in a place that is full of snow 5 out of 7 days a week you are not going to benefit off 205s.

I will be trying 205s square to see how it works in my climate.
If it turns that it is too narrow, it won't be hard to burn them in one winter and buy a pair of 225s for the rear for the following year.

Since it is so subjective to conditions and driving style, I will start with the manufacturer's recommendation.

I think it would work great on a 128, but my worry is that much torque of the 135 on 205s just doesn't add up. I've actually read some posts on 1addicts about people who have used 205s in the winter and have not been satisfied with them due to this same issue...

definitely interested to hear your experiences with them though!

I'm going with the 17" 205 square setup.

Here in Ottawa we can get a crap load of snow some winters.

If it's that bad out I'll just stay home pour another coffee
and catch up reading the 1addicts forum.

haha, I think I might try 225 since we barely get snow here. If it is bad, I'm staying home lol.

If I lived where you do I would do the same. You could also consider performance snows as well.

Would LM-25 RFT considered as performance tires?

I think so but I have not heard good things about those tires. Check out the Dunlop 4d. I had the 3d and loved them.

It's really personal preference. If you are worried about having to change a tire or call a tow from a flat then go with RFTs. I prefer to just call a tow truck so I run non-RFTs.

I went with 215/45/17 studless snow tires and haven't had any problems. Going into my 2nd winter with these things in Colorado and can't complain at all.

If you get a lot of snow/ice and are going with a dedicated winter set up then don't get all seasons, get a real winter tire like Blizzaks or ExtremeWinterContacts.

I just store the 1er for three months, put the Blizzak WS-70s on the beater Focus, and drive on.

A cheap winter car with good snows on all four corners can't be that expensive, compared to the beating that your 1er takes during a nasty winter, over the life of the car.

South of the Mason-Dixon line, I'd put snows on a 1er, and go for it, unless you are up in the mountain boonies.

North of the line (like me), all bets are off.

But, I am spoiled. My local garage mechanic stores it for free : )

Winter wheel package arrived today from Tire Rack: 225/45R-17 Michelin Primacy Alpin PA3 ZP run flats on 17" x 7.5" Sport Edition A8 wheels in Ti Gunmetal finish with TPMS sensors and BMW center caps. Wheels look better than expected… here is a quick cell phone photo.
