I'm a little confused. According to this site, you need the map update (list $204) AND the USB (list $41).
Map Update

But people on the linked page above seem to be saying they just used the USB.

And if you just buy the update, without the USB, how is it delivered to you? I'm so confused!

The dealer did it for me for free because of all of the problem area's associated with the original software back in 09. Now it no longer shows a gas station in my back yard.

The update alone comes on a USB stick(32gig) and can be purchased from many sources. I used getbmwparts.com

Then you can take it to the dealer to have it installed $$$
or
Go to dealer and have them supply the update and installation. $$$$
or
Get an FSC code and do it yourself.

Just search BMW FSC code needed.

Good luck.

I have always wondering is there anything I can do for my 2008 135i nav? It is the only year with the flip up screen, not widescreen, and has the crappiest navigation of them all... Can I update with 2012 disks?

When I complained to my SA about how bad the BMW nav system is, he told me that there'd been a comparison of 26 nav systems, and the BMW system came in 26th. And BMW steadfastly refuses to do anything about it.

Does the NAV "look" any different? Or just an update with new maps, points of interest, etc.?

I'm interested. I have a 5/2009 135i, and the page says I need the FSC code, and I have to take it to the dealer. Is there a way I can do it myself once I have the FSC code, or is that only for the 9/2009 models and newer?

As far as I can tell only the maps and POI are updated.
I went from 2012 -> 2013

It depends on the firmware revision in the CIC. If you have the original firmware from 5/2009 you cannot update the maps via USB. If the firmware has been updated then you might be able to update the maps via USB.

This is correct according to folks that have been able to perform the update themselves on a vehicle produced up to 9/2009 - however, the general rule according to BMW is that the USB media stick is only applicable to models produced from 9/2009 and on.

OK, have a weird Navigation Update issue.

Did a Euro Delivery. Received car here, still has European maps loaded. It currently shows my car sitting in the middle of the Atlantic, and the closest city is in Spain. Dealer had told us we would have to buy the North American maps.

Tried to order the map update (USB key) online from BMW. They told me I don't need an update and cancelled my order?!??!

For those that did Euro Delivery and had Navigation, was the vehicle delivered to you here with the North American maps already loaded?

Mine had the European maps loaded at delivery in Munich. They were replaced with the North American maps when it was at the delivery center in the USA. If the Canadian procedure is the same your Euro maps should have been replaced before it arrived at the dealer for redelivery. Try contacting BMW directly and ask why the North American maps were not installed and ask what will they do about it.
