LSD upgrade

yes, its been discussed, yes i have searched, yadda yadda.

for those who have done the LSD upgrade on their 1er, was it worth it?

track less than 10 times a year, mostly spirited driving, in the car a lot for work and like to "take it to the max between gear changes" a few times a day.

anyone have dinan and love it? and arent complaining about the money...?

wavetrac?

quiafe?

school me thanks guys. trolls go home, kidding

Being a vendor i won't go into brands.
But the LSD will definitely make your car go faster on the track.
Is it worth it ? Thats completely up to you to decide that based on how much you care about getting better time at the track (and how much you are willing to spend to do that)

for the record, i hate the e-diff...being in the north east, it sucks in the snow and doesnt lay down the power in the dry very well

If you actually enjoy driving your car, the yes the LSD is absolutely worth it. It changes the way the whole car handles. My favorite mod by far other than bigger brakes.

I have had Stock, Quaife 3.46 and a Wavetrac 3.08. I recommend a Quaife or Wavetrac in 3.08.

Quafe 3.46 - was very smooth Diff. The 3.46 was too aggressive for my taste. My mpg went down around 3 miles per gallon. The car however felt very quick and was always ready to pounce. It made 1st gear pretty much useless as the gears were so short you would have to shift into second literally half way through an intersection after a stop light.

Wavetrac 3.08 - good unit. No issues. Gear the same as stock. Tracked it several times and was very happy with it.

Went with the Quaife 3.46 myself. I track the car a lot. It really helped keep the car put the power down and made it safer even with DSC off.

With the e-diff, the rear end would sometimes go sideways when accelerating under full power, even when driving in a straight line on the street.

The 3.46 is aggressive and MPG will go down slightly, as "ilikebmxbikes" pointed out. The car feals very quick and ready to pounce. With all that new available torque, its hard to not drive it like an A-O every chance you get...

Members have only commented on torsen type LSD's so far (Wavetrac and Quaife), but there are clutch type LSD's to also consider. Clutch LSD's are more oriented for track junkies, make a little more noise, and require ongoing clutch maintenance.

raising the gear ratio is always fun...did this back intheday with my cutlass. So fun. Does the Qualife damper daily driver abilities?

I currently have the quaife from ilikebmxbikes in the 3.46 gearing. For daily driving I do recommend the 3.08 stock gearing. The 3.46 is great for autox and track, but is overkill on the streets.

The biggest advantage of a limited slip is mechanical control. The e-diff will rarely engage because the wheels are no longer slipping excessively relatively to each other except in extreme circumstances. This puts you back in control of the throttle rather than have the engine cutting out and reducing power or having brakes applied to your inside wheel.

Out of the options out there I went quaife as there are no real wear components and I live in a no snow climate. Both quaife and torsen diffs are build around gearing and load balance between the two back wheels. (Gripping wheel can have some percentage greater grip than least grippy wheel). If you're concerned about zero grip conditions and driving on ice, then you may want to go with wavetrac or a clutch type lsd, which even in the no grip scenario provides some amount of lock on the axle and allows control of the more grippy wheel. There's a lot of info on the web on how each works. The only ones I've heard of people regretting were clutch type and it was due to wear.

One thing I don't like about getting a diff is that BMW welded the ring gears on. Wavetrac wants you to send your current diff to them to cut off the gear, drill holes and send it back. All that costs 700 dollars. Is there no way to get another ring gear, drill some holes in it and send it out for less than 700 dollars?

if you have a 6 speed you will need to get it machined.

You can do like me and buy a pre-owned large pumpkin bolted diff on eBay for your 6-speed manual. I paid $450 for it, got it shipped for free to HPA, HPA converted it to a Quaife LSD and shipped it to me in Canada ready to install on my car. I sold my welded 3.08 diff for $500 locally to recoup some of the costs...

Correct - you can find a bolted diff of of early 2007 335i's to serve as the core

How labor intensive is the bolted (6AT) diff? IE if I were to "just" purchase the limited slip, what's involved in swapping it into the pumpkin?

I should probably ditch the E diff it's awful.

i asked my SA a few months back when the car was in for summer wheel/tire swap to look at my diff because i wanted to do a swap. its a 2012 6mt and he said the diff was NOT welded on as i think some of the other models are...

if it is bolted...what are my concerns aside from core cost in terms of ordering from wavetrac or quaife? is it straight forward fitment, ie order new one, bolt it on? or do i need some additional hardware/things to buy to make it fit and work correctly?

all in all...im tempted just to do the Dinan diff so i dont have to worry about this stuff...

There is a mighty good FAQ post on 1addicts forum about the terminology (welded/bolted/small pumpkin/large pumpkin, ratio). If you have 5 minutes to spare, it will clarify a lot of your doubts.

The welded and bolted diff that you keep hearing about referd to the internal ring gear, not discernible from the outside. So your dealership SA or tech may not even be aware of the difference between the two ...

Thought I would post the link to the FAQ in this thread to avoid duplication and redundant questions ...

The best FAQ with pictures to educate yourself on the process, is this one: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...t=differential.

They are not ready for welded ring Diffs, only bolted, and you are right, the steptronic and DCT owners (bolted) now have another affordable option to choose from.

M-factory primarily serves the JDM crowd.

With a bolted ring gear Diff (DCT + steptronic), 3 hours of labor by a qualified shop is required, as there are tight tolerances to respect and shims to add/remove to install the LSD chunk (inside the pumpkin).

The whole pumpkin installation (LSD chunk already installed) is a reasonable DIY, if you have the proper tools.

This table highlites the options and subtle differences, to help you pick and search for the proper used pumpkin
