Orange Peel Correction

I've seen a variety of posts in different forums in which the factory orange peel was corrected via intensive wetsanding and polishing. Has anyone on here done this (or thinking of doing this) to their 1M? Anyone know a detailer in Chicago that they would trust with such a project?

I wouldn't do it. Just keep her shiney! Does the paint texture really bother you that much?

It's not that it bothers me "that much," but the fact that the results are stunning when done properly: http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=141365.

To me, its all about cost vs performance. Wet sanding and corrections like this take 80 to 100 hours to complete. The high end detailers will charge anywhere from 200 to 400 bucks an hour to do this work. Any way you figure it, to get this done you're going to be spending north of 10 grand and taking off nearly 10 microns of paint in the process. Just not worth it IMHO. I'll deal with the orange peel effect.

Wow, that was an amazing transformation! Based on what I read in the thread, that guy charges less than $2,000 dollars to do that work- I'd be glad to pay that for those results!

I'm not much for spending money on cosmetics but that is the most beautiful paint job I've ever seen on a production car. JUST WOW!

I could be talked into that especially on BSM!

I like the orange peel, the dimples help with aerodynamics!....

The results were phenomenal. Also gave me a new level of respect for detailers. Never realized they used such high tech tools.

That is pretty cool, but is that paint treatment permanent or easily maintainable post-process? Or will it require such treatment every so often?

Well, the the paint texture really can't ever go back to being orange peeled after it has been corrected, but like most surfaces, the less texture there is on it, the more visible imperfections become. All in all, probably not a whole lot more upkeep than what was required before the correction.

Knocking down the 'orange peel' is permanent but you will still have to deal with swirl marks. The linked detailers obviously know what they are doing but in the wrong hands you could lose more clear coat than is necessary. That's my biggest concern.

I must be in the wrong business ... (100 hrs x $200/hr = $20,000) -> you could get a very high quality repaint of the car for that amount.

Eh... well if I had the money to throw around, why not. Though, while totally impressive and much respect to these guys and their quest for perfection, given the environment in which a car usually operates, seems like a bit much if not going to a museum to be displayed.

I really don't mind the "orange peel" but those images in that thread... wow amazing. Seriously amazing. Almost like a chrome paint.

god, I hate any discussions on orange peel.

i guess i second what Metak said; does it really bother you to the point of stripping down the paint to get a smooth finish? on an old car, sure...you're repainting and starting with a fresh coat of paint. but to do this on a factory job is kinda pointless since you're sanding down original paint. it's less protection overall...why do it?

I agree with you, but remember painting and detailing are two different things. Typically most auto painters will meticulously re-spray a car laying down the layers of the base coats to get the colors just right and perfectly even. They'll then apply the clear coat finally they will run over the clear with a heavy wool pad on a rotary to even out the top coat of paint and call it a day. It'll be shiny, paint will be defect free and perfectly even, but it wont look like this M3 does.

That heavy wool pad will still leave tons of micro marring and buffer trails in the fresh paint. Once the paint has cured a detailer will still be needed to fix that micro marring and buffer trails from the painter. Granted, it will take the detailer 8 to 16 hours instead of 100

That's an amazing job but I don't think it's worth $2K. Just wash, clay, polish and wax and call it a day. Orange peel is cool.

Its really beautiful--BUT-- That's 6 track tires. Plus track pads. I think I'll settle for some orange peel.

Sensational result and all credit to the detailing firm. But, I have to agree with posts questioning the sense of spending that kind of effort/wad on a daily driver.

This is England we're talking about. The day after he picks up the car it is going to get driven down a filthy motorway in the pissing rain and be covered in mud, grit, grime, stone chips and cow dung.

I could understand doing this on a show vehicle, but certainly not on an M3 or similar. I'd stick with "wash, clay, polish and wax and call it a day."
