Stupidist Thing I've heard in a while
One of the guys I work with owns a 2008 V6 Toyota Klueger, he told us it was in yesterday to Toyota for his 40,000 km service. Ok, pretty unremarkable story, unremarkable car, unremarkable service.
Now the only thing was that the Klueger's done 80,000 kms So I'm pretty sure that they will have 10,000km service intervals, so it has done 50,000 kms on Semi Synthetic oil, the oil filter had collapsed and when they went to drain the oil (not that there was actually much to drain) the amount of sludge was apparently unbelievable. The mechanic said that normally they'd run some stuff that will dissolve the oil and flush it, but he was afraid that there would be too much crap go through the engine. At least it was only a Toyota, would be a real shame if it was a nice car. the worst thing is that this guy was involved in the Fuel and Oil game for 15 years and should have known better. Anyway, his car is still running without apparent problems (at this stage), I told him he needs to trade it into a non local dealer next week. Mechanic said would be $8500 for new engine + labour. |

How a seizure hasn't occurred is beyond me. Did the mech also find slithers of metal in the oil?
Amazes me actually. 50,000km on the same oil, same filter. Makes me cringe! |

I bet if they would have had full synthetic in it that 2GR wouldn't have nearly the amount of sludge either.

The guy just changes the oil and filter and thanks God the engine still runs. Don't sell it, just change the oil more frequently.

probably happens more often than you think. I have an uncle who never put his v8 fairmont (BA I think) in for a service until it started running a bit rough at 70,000km's. It still had the original oil in it. An oil change and a service and it was back to running like normal again. It's an extreme example, but it does make you wonder how necessary shorter intervals are, and it definately makes me think that people who seem to change the oil every second weekend are just wasting money and resources.....

My logic is, I'd rather pay for the oil now than the engine later. If it's overkill it's overkill... |
