For AW aficionados: about Alpinweiß III

The Alpine White color of the 1M is "Alpinweiß III" (a non-metallic color, unlike BSM and VO).

If you prefer AW over BSM and VO and BMW offered the choice between AW I, AW II or AW III for the 1M, which one would you have picked. Would you have fancied the old AW paint colors AW I or AW II (actually, nowadays it seems trendy to say "vintage" instead of "old" ) ?

From what I read:
  • AW I (paint color code #146 | 51 91 1 880 835) is a single stage paint (non clearcoated) (1982-1985) and is told to have a subtle reddish hue to it (according to some it even has a subtle creamy hue compared to AW II);
  • AW II (paint color code #218 | 51 91 9 102 478) is also a single stage paint (non-clearcoated) (1985-1991) and has some carbon black mixed in and less red hue than AW I (according to some black makes it more 'pure' than AW I);
  • AW III (paint color code #300 | 51 91 1 052 274) (1991-present) is a two-stage paint (clearcoated) and has a subtle pearl/blue hue to (according to some blue makes it deeper and pop more).
Single stage paint (AW I and AW II) versus two-stage paint (AW III): a single stage paint will remove color onto your polishing pad, and a clearcoat will not (unless you have polished through the clearcoat).

I have yet to see any pearl/blue to my AW 1M. Then again, I am color-blind

Interesting Artemis. I always thought it was AW II, but its AW III.

I saw a 116i F21 new 1 series in ARCTIC(?) White which is a bit metallic white. Should look nice on a 1M I guess, but AWIII is fine with me. Original colour. No nonsense. Looks very sporty WRC/rallylike and that's what I wanted

Cheers
Robin

BMW color paint codes:
http://www.automotivetouchup.com/touch-up-paint/bmw/

300 = Alpine White
475 = Black Sapphire Metallic.
B44 = Valencia Orange Metallic

Actually, we always refer to BSM and VO. Either it's BS and VO or it's BSM and VOM.
