! Series grinding & cluncking sound when changing gear

I have a 2009 ES cabriolet 1 series which has recently developed strange noises when changing gear - 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th. Also sounds like the gear box is ready to fall out if you're listening to it from outside the car. It's been diagnosed as a timing selector mechanism fault.. is this a common thing with BMW's/1-series?

The best way I can describe the sound seconds after you change gear, is like a chain grinding on something immediately followed by a clunk!

And also, I'm at about 60,000 miles - does this fault mean I'm unlikely to get many more miles before it packs up again.......

.......Having recently had the engine replaced from a snapped timing chain (standard!!) I'm just wondering if it's worth giving up on the car :-(

Hope someone can help :-) x

Timing chain snapped, never herd of that. i thought timing chains dont break.
Most cars make a grinding noise when changing gear, esp if your stood outside the car u can hear it more, if you can hear it in car when driving then i would worry..
Modern cars can go a lot more than 60,000 miles, at least double that before you start to get a lot of faults and problems. i wouldnt sell it considering youve just had the engine replaced.

After looking online it seems it is a fault from bmw that the timing chain broke, when theyre suppose to last the life of the car. did you ask bmw for a good will gesture to help you fix your engine.

Most cars do NOT make a "grinding noise" when changing gears. I've owned manual transmission cars since 1968, and have never had one "grind". If the clutch isn't releasing all the way, it will cause grinding of the gears - or it could be worn synchronizers within the gearbox. Get it checked out by a reputable Independent shop - chances are you could be looking at a clutch job or replacing the transmission.

clunking sounds are commonly heard in manual gearboxes----after all it is a mechanical process----but grinding!? definitely not normal.
