OIL CHANGE
From what i have been reading, people are saying that thier on board computer tells them to go get a maintanence (oil change, replace filters, refill washer fluid, etc) every 10 thousand miles or above. Correct me if im wrong but this is wrong, because oil and filters and etc should be changed every 3000 to 5000 miles. If you do take it in earlier like every 3000 to 5000 miles how much on average does BMW cost to do the maintanence.

OBC does in fact remind you for maintenance... The calculation is based on litres of fuel consumed between changes.
BTW, with the advent of synthetic oil, which all BMW built after 1998 should be using, no need to change every 3000-5000 miles. Why would you think that taking the car in for service earlier would cost any less for the oil change? An oil change is an oil change, regardless if at 3000 miles or 10,000 miles |

well I thought or read from some threads that if they go to get a earlier maintanence including oil change and all that good stuff than what the computer tells them..then BMW will charge....How often do you normally have to take it in???

oil changes
I don't take it in for oil changes.
I do them myself. I buy the oem filters from racingking and put in mobil 1 oil and change my oil once a year (only drive 5000 miles/year on the 540i). Its not that the oil needs changing, just that I don't like the fact it has been there so long and don't want to risk the paper filter element starting to dissolve and circulate into the oil pump passages, as I have heard this a problem on some long change interval vehicles. Oil filter is in the top of the engine compartment and you can purchase a topsider oil extractor to remove oil through dipstick and the both combined make the change a peice of cake. Cheers, Fern |

There is no dipstick on the US-model E90s--you have to lift the car to drain the oil.
BMW Full Maintenance will pay for an oil change once per year if the car is not driven enough miles to cause the CBS to indicate that service is required. In other markets, the rule is every 2 years. An oil change at a dealership or independent mechanic specializing in BMWs, using a factory filter and synthetic oil, should cost $70-110, depending on the area you are in. |

Normal. If you are getting more than 21 MPG or so, the CBS computer increases the oil service interval from the default of 15,500 miles. The highest I've seen it go is in the 18-19,000 mile range.
In most countries, the default oil service based on time is every 2 years. BMW did not change this computation for the US, even though in the US, the default time-based service occurs every 1 year. When was your car delivered? In the US, you can receive a free oil change one year after the delivery date, regardless of mileage or what the CBS computer says. |

delivery date on my car was mid-august. i'm gonna get it changed friday and then will hold off for the freebie. i should have probably done it at 5k probably.
i'm sure the computer is fine to go by, but for 100bux it doesn't hurt to change it more often. |
