Exclamation BMW Recall: 2010-2012 1-Series for VANOS Bolts Issue (6 cylinder models)

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW NA Recalling 156,137 Cars for VANOS Issue
223
COMMENTS

BMW is recalling a 156,137 vehicles, both luxury cars and SUVs, to make sure bolts holding a component in their six-cylinder engines don't break loose and cause stalling or engine damage.

BMW says it has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in rare cases, bolts holding the variable camshaft timing unit may come loose or break, causing the engine to go into a "safe mode." If the problem continues, it can lead to stalling, engine damage – and it may not start.

Drivers will know of a telltale sign of trouble when the "check engine" or "service engine soon" light illuminates. BMW says they need to contact a dealer for service immediately. If the car stalls, they should get over to the side of the road and call for a tow.

The problem is confined to 2010 to 2012 vehicles with the popular inline six-cylinder engine. Those vehicles being recalled include:

2010-12 1 Series
2010-12 3 Series
2010-2012 5 Series
2010-12 5 Series Gran Turismo
2012 6 Series
2010-2012 X3 crossover
2010-12 X5 crossover
2010-12 X6 crossover
2010-12 Z4 sports car

Anyone care to list more information on this? Is this something i should make an appointment for and get taken care of right away or can this wait a week or two?

Is this linked to running the car hard? DD here not a track car.

Until the recall is actually issued, it's really impossible to determine if your particular car is part of it. So far it's just an email by BMW to NHTSA with some models and a total number of cars. Your dealer may or may not have more info. They may or may not be willing to share before the formal announcement.

"German carmaker BMW (BMWG.DE) said it would voluntarily recall more than 156,000 vehicles in the United States, including its popular 3 Series compact sedan, to check for potentially defective bolts that could lead to engine damage.

BMW said it would check whether bolts holding a certain component in vehicles with six-cylinder engines were prone to loosening or breaking.

The vehicles, which also include the Series 5 and the Z4 sports cars, are from model years 2010 to 2012, the company said in an email."

The total number of cars produced in those series exceeds 156,000. Just BMW 3 series sales in the US for 2010-2012 were about 300,000. So it's not everyone. To answer the above question, it won't be linked to usage, it will be specified by specific model, production date, and maybe VIN number.

But even that would be reassuring. If you're not included, presumably BMW thinks your car is OK. They could be wrong, but it's far from nothing.

Yea, we need an actual SIB or something to determine the specific build dates for the effected vehicles.

i'm assuming BMW must have updated this database where you can check your VIN to see if you have any recalls on your car.

I just checked mine, but no recall was issued.

I'll probably check from day-to-day for a while, to be sure.

I asked my SA about this today. He had no idea about the recall. I'd wait a bit.

German auto maker BMW confirmed Friday it was recalling almost half a million cars to fix a weak screw in six-cylinder engines.

http://www.dw.de/bmw-extends-recall-...ect/a-17561351

BMW spoke of 20,000 cars affected in Canada...

Corporate called me regarding something else so I asked about that recall. They don't have info yet but mentioned if under that recall letters would go out within a month.

Mine isn't showing anything either, but it's too early. It's a good link to use to keep an eye on it, thanks. It took awhile for the last one to show up anywhere. Hell, my dealership was still learning about it when I questioned them on it.

Would be interesting to see if anyone on the forum had a problem with Vanos bolts outside of these production dates/models?

N55 engines only!
It appears to be a poor choice of supplier/material that secures the vans in place. Over time, bolts holding the assembly can loosen and even fail completely; according to my SA.
