Hi All - I'm at the point where we won't be towing the small track trailer anymore (haven't for some time), so I have a hitch and light control module available (and a small track trailer for that matter) in SoCal. PM me if interested. If in SoCal, you can see how I have the light box wired before I remove it.

I'm about to install my curt 11184 hitch on my 2011 135 M-Sport and I'm a bit perplexed with the install instructions. Curt says only the bottom fascia of the bumper need to be removed yet every example on this thread shows bumper cover and lights removed. Am I missing something here? Has Curt revised this hitch in someway?

Here is the PDF instructions.

Everytime I installed it I removed the bumper. I do think you can install it by only removing the diffuser, but space would be tight. Basically, you can do it either way. Give the diffuser route a try and if it doesn't work out, just take the whole bumper off.

Thanks for the reply. Sure enough, the hitch can can be installed with only diffuser removed. Took me all of 15 minutes to bolt it up. Didn't even have to drop the muffler as described in the curt install instructions. I'm going to see if can have the hitch modified so it's not visible. Either move the receiver back or go with a vertical setup.

Is anybody SoCal looking for a complete setup? Hitch, light controller, trailer? I ready to get rid of my complete setup that I used to go to Road Atlanta a few years ago.

Ditto. Same here. I did mine with only removing the diffuser and no mod to the muffler as well. Quick install however the top bolts were a little difficult to tighten which took the most time.

Hey guys so i went and installed the hitch by etrailers aswell. Was pretty simple , no removal of bumber ,just the "diffuser". Just need extra hand to hold it up before the 1st nut is installed.

What is safe tow capacity? I'm interested in getting a small travel trailer like a teardrop or popup. Some of these are around 1000 lbs.

I did from east coast to west and back last year with 4x8 uhaul trailers full of home furniture and it was totally ok!

Have a look in a manual which model you have.

Driving is even better with a trailer. Not acceleration, but cornering.
Cruising is also OK! I enjoyed it way more as compared to audi a4 I used to drive in germany.

I'm looking into a hitch and this post has been very helpful BUT seems no one makes a hitch for a 2012 135i... I contacted Etrailer and they confirmed with Curt that they only fit up to 2011. I cant imagine BMW would of changed the bolt pattern on the car. Anyone ever try to put a hitch on a 2012?

I don't have an answer for you (my 1er was an '09) but I do still have a trailer hitch wiring kit for sale, so if you are interested let me know.

For anyone with a 2012+ the Curt hitch does fit! The only "modification" you will need to make is to one of the exhaust brackets. I just bent the gussets on the support back with a hammer. [IMG][/IMG]

I have a 2012 128i, installed the 2011 135i version of the hitch. Fits fine, no issues.

DesertFox: Thank you for this ... I want to install a hitch on a 2013 128.

Do you have a part number for the hitch you used? Is it: Curt #11184

Thank you!

Can anyone confirm that they've been successful in wiring in a trailer light adapter to an LCI tail car?

I've found both of these adapters:

OEM (includes the OEM retrofit module): http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/71...ined_undefined

Aftermarket: http://www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-V...id=20101170141

Thanks!

Update: Yes, it is Curt #11184

I installed it on Sunday. Fits great, no issues on a 2013 128i. I'm using it for a bike rack; plenty of clearance.

Note: I did NOT remove the bumper cover to install. However, it would have been much easier if I had.

Hi All,

I have read a lot of the posts here but may have missed something. Towing a small trailed with less than 200 lbs tongue weight shouldn't be a issue, but how well will it handle a bike rack. They talk about adding straps, which is what I am trying to avoid.

Does anyone have thoughts or experiences on this? I have a Thule 1 in. receiver mounted rack for ~ 3 bikes, although I'll never carry more than 1.

TIA

You will be fine with a hitch mounted bike rack loaded with as many bikes as it can hold.
