2008 BMW 128i  [10.00]
Drive shaft clunk/ Accelerator depress noise

Since we are talking about noises, I want to tell you about mine that Ive had for a very long time and thought it was trans only ( it got quieter with the e46 Trans Mounts).

The noise is a metallic clunk/thump, audible with windows up and down. It appears to be from directly below you or behind you.
It occurs often at low speed/parking lot when press the clutch to disengage the gear and sometimes when i let the accelerator go in gear.

I thought this was normal Transmission - fly wheel and clutch, but I suspect its not that.

The e90post searching has shown me that it has to do with the driveshaft link to the rear pumpkin. Apparently Blue Locktite is the answer.

Any insight? If I am to change fluids I want to settle this then, otherwise its clutch /fly wheel related

I definitely hear something like that but I only notice it when I'm driving beside a wall or a barricade (where sound can echo off of) with my windows open and I press down on the clutch pedal to shift. It's quiet enough that I don't hear it otherwise. I thought it was just the actual mechanical noise of the clutch.

I hear that noise too.. It is mainly audible when i switch from first to reverse when releasing the clutch. It's been doing that sin e the day I got it at 24k. 30k and the sound tmdidnt get worse though.. Looking forward to m3 transmission mounts too so that hopefully it'll improve

I get this sound also. You'll have a ride with me sometime soon and I'll let you hear it. Definitely not tranny because I'm AT and you're MT. At first I thought my sound was brake pads clunking when switching from forward to reverse, but that's not the case. It's definitely sounding closer to the axle or diff.

Best thing would be to get it on a lift and under it while attempting to induce the clunk. Lots of things could be off here from diff mounts to worn guibos.

I get this same thunk. I have only heard it after shifting into Reverse from Drive and driving in reverse for a second or two and I get a large thunk that sounds like it's below me. Sounds like something is catching and being released causing the deep click/thunk.

MT/AT: disconnect drive shaft, check the U-joints; while disconnected, check diff pinion for excessive backlash...could also be rear brake pads shifting...check diff mounting points and trans rear mount too.

MT: it's likely that the dual-mass flywheel is rattling, or possibly the input shaft bearing is bad...these are rare but still a possibility: bad clutch disc, warped pressure plate or worn bearings in the actuator arm...

I've had this same noise as well, replicated it for a BMW tech on my last dealer visit inside of their parking garage. Within seconds he was confident it was diff related, something about some flange...and made note of on my service record for the next time I drop it off. I'll give them a ring to see if i can dig anything else up.

Edit: I have changed my fluids since and it did not not make a difference..
