Pad Change

Looks like pad change is not set up to be easy. Looks like the calipers need to be removed to change the pads. Also notice the relationship between the hub/wheel mounting surface and the outside of the brake.

I noticed this too, and it doesn't have the normal Brembo easy bleed valve either.

However, the first thing that struck me was that those pads are enormous.

I was in my local Audi dealer this morning and checked the R8's brakes and of course you can pull the pads from atop the caliper as you shoudl be able to on a good fixed caliper (like every Brembo brake I've ever owned on my stable of Italian bikes over the years). Guess even Brembo makes lower end stuff too.

Of course the Brembos on my MV are not only designed for easy pad replacement (as normal), but they'll pop your eyeballs out your head they're so damn strong.

Sorry for the bad picture -- Again over exposed for poor light and forgot to revert to settings. These will stand the 2500 pound car on its nose; but, the 135I brakes feel just as good!!

My expectations -- the Trackster brakes -- one pin, one clip, two bleeders.

I wonder what the rationale is for that design. The bmw calipers appear to be one piece monoblocks so I don't know why they need all the extra strength of those additional crosspiece castings. Once again, this is why Porsche has always been in a league of it's own...

Those calipers are definitely prettier from a distance than close up. The bridges will help with stiffness but at the expense of ease of changing pads. I simply assumed that pad changes would be possible from the front in the "normal" way. Too bad, this is definitely a design where production costs were a major driving factor. Anyone intending to change their pads for track days will be cursing.

Is it the two aft-facing cap screws that secure the caliper to the upright?

How do the rear calipers work in comparison?

Garage List
I'm thinking that this caliper will have a brembo bolt pattern so in theory we could get one of their quick change calipers and bolt it right on...
