Is JB3 worth it? Benefits? Detectable?
Hey guys, Im just curious as to the newer JB3 plug n play unit. Just looking for general input as to how easy it is to install, can it be detected by the dealership, can it be easily REMOVED if necessary, what are the primary power increases (im going to be mainly stock, maybe exhaust), and finally, how safe is this for the engine if I am mainly stock??
Thanks |

JB3 is a very popular choice. I would do a search there is already plenty of info on these forums. Also, if you choose to go for an aftermarket exhaust over the performance one you'll lose your warranty anyway.

JB3 is definitely worth it, it's the best bang for your buck power wise and IMO the first performance mod to be done. It grows with your car as you modify it so it is very flexible. The PnP version is easy to install and uninstall as well.

Im primarily concerned with how easy it is to install, keep unidentified and uninstall? Does the JB3 require taking the whole ECU out? It does say PnP.. Also, how does the JB+ install, i saw some posts about needing to hook up a laptop for that, however I dont have a laptop nor will I ever. I got the impression from the manufacturers page that it just plugged into a wire that was easily accessible and you then chose your programs via the accel pedal. |

Get the JB3 PnP. I just installed one this past week and it kicks ass. This is a completely different car. Cannot put into words how much of a difference it made. The install's pretty easy - it took me right at 30 minutes to do it, but I've been taking cars apart professionally and for hobby for 20 years.
Get it and smile. |

I would say it is easy to install, best bang for the bucks, non-detectable after faulty codes removed (if there are any), but it won't pass visual inspection if dealers decided to open up the ECU box to find out traces of tempering.

Ya see thats not for me, I dont wanna hafta to worry about the dealer finding the shit, nor the fault code removal (dont have a laptop). Isnt there a REAL plug n play chip that you just wire in somewhere in the cabin? I thought the JB+ was that was, and you could just remove it and reinstall it anytime without codes showing up on ur ecu..

the JB+ installs in like 2 minutes... but does throw some codes i believe...
the JB3 installs in like 10-20 minutes (30 mins first time but after that you can do it faster) ... and doesnt throw any codes when you stick to the lower maps... 1-5... you only have to deal with codes and bullshit when you get to the higher maps... 6-7... but by then you got soo much aftermarket parts that your warrenty is fucked anyway... its cheap, its easy, its pretty undetectable.... anyway... bmw gives you service every like 10-15,000 miles.... which is like once or twice a year as long as nothing goes wrong with the car... this will take 20 minutes out of your day to install and uninstall everytimes you take it to them... and will reward you with 80-100 horsepower... easily.... |

You will not lose your warranty if you go with an aftermarket downpipe back exhaust. There isn't one person on these forums who has had an issue with this. I dont why people write/think that without doing their research. If you switch out your downpipe itself (turbos spool much faster) or install parts in a faulty way then you might have issue but even still there is the Magnas Moss Act. Just establish a good relationship with your dealer and take out that sofware before visits!

Ok so can someone explain to me exactly how the JB+ installs? Do I need a laptop? Cuz I know the JB3 you need to actually pull out the ecu, so its not really PnP..

you remove the filter/air box, unplug a sensor, plug the JB+ into the sensor, then the harness you just unplugged..reinstall the air box..you're done. At stock settings it's not supposed to throw any codes. I "have heard" of people who run full boost with a solenoid bypass trick and have zero codes...who could that be out there..anyone? You would obviously have to uninstall b/f service as it would be obvious on visual inspection.

Ok sweet, that seems a bit easier..So when you say STOCK modes, is that 0-3 maps? And can you just uninstall it and then install it after a service no big deal, like does the car just re-adjust as soon as you reinstall?
This is a bit diff for me coming from a Mk5 GTI, my APR chip was done at a dealer thru cabling with a laptop program, I did nothing, all I could do was select between stock and 93 oct programs via the cruise control stalk, so thisll be a first as far as PnP chipping. Really the thing I wanna stay away from thou obviously is the coding, since I have no way of removing them, if I throw a code and then need to go in for service, they could easily find the code, even if I removed the JB+ |

"A true plug and play tune offering safe and adjustable 25-70whp gains. Can be installed and removed in minutes without any tools.
At the default setting of +2.75psi average increases are 40hp and 50tq to the wheels. For those looking to take things to the max up to +4.75psi can be quickly dialed in! Does not trigger codes and does not require entering the ECU area for installation. Compatible with all ECU versions and transmissions for BMW 135, 335, 535, and X6." Thats off EMS tuning, describing the JB+ PnP. So the "default" setting, is that the one that automatically works as soon as you hook it up? Still not quite sure how you change maps with this one, I know the JB3 you use the accel pedal, but this one not sure yet.. They say it does not trigger codes, is this bull? |

JB+ just adjusts boost on the turbo's....PnP does more with fuel curves, etc...it usually takes a few days of driving for the ECU to adapt and feel maximum gains...I've been in a car with JB+ at full boost, and solenoid bypass (cough, cough) and it is a hoot...

+1000. If you're not in a position to spend an extra $200-$300 on a tool to let you identify and clear codes in the DME, then your certainly not in a position to pay your local BMW dealer to fix a major engine problem that they blame on your tune.
