Painting Caliper and Hub
Got tired of looking at my rusted calipers and hubs, and since BMW thinks that is normal I took action and beatified it myself, as it should have come with the car at the first place. I used red caliper paint from Autozone, comes in a box with brake cleaner and a brush. I did not want to use spray paint as I did not feel like removing the whole brake caliper, bleeding the brake lines and mounting again. This set comes with a can of red ceramic paint. I pained 4 layers it it dries very fast and covers well, at least the2nd, 3rd, and 4th time around it does. First coat it barely covers at all, but lays down a nice base for the remaining coats.
Original look at the rusted setup Cleaning up the rust with a wire brush mounted to my power drill: Cleaned everything up with brake cleaner spray, works great: I removed the spring and pained it black, after working on it with the wire brush: Next I made a little helper out of a cardboard box, this way I dont have to mask everything off, much quicker and clean: Finish hub: Finish caliper, on the left side I actually unmounted the caliper and removed the brake pad, on the right side I decided to leave everything mounted, works just as good, but you do need to be a bit more careful not to paint the pad. What do you think, I love it and just hope it stays like that for a long time, but I think if you take care of the rust correctly, it should not be a problem. The rust on the caliper and hubs is really just surface rust and very easy to remove. Let me know if you have any questions, I absolutely love the look on my 128i

I also used brush on red paint on my 128i's calipers. I did it within a few weeks of buying the car so there was no rust. I just wanted red calipers. It is holding up well but the calipers get brake dust on them worse than the wheels. I usually do not take the time to throughly clean them. But the paint has not peeled and they look better than rusted bare metal, at the very least.

looks good! I like the red.
When I took deliver of my car they were already rusted. I told the dealership it was not normal for a BRAND new car. Dealership said BMW didn't paint them anymore, but my dealership decided to paint mine silver for me. I only had to pay 1/2 the price($150). Sadly, I forgot to ask if I could pick colors. They painted them gray! I've had 0 problems with them though. Yours look horrible before painting!

Wow, looks really good... I might do that to my calipers as well.
Haven't seen much rust yet on my car since it's summer and I've only had the car for a month... I did notice that the center hubs of all four wheels were rusting, so I cleaned them up with a wire brush and applied a coat of anti-seize prevent any further rusting... EDIT: There shouldn't be rust on the calipers... They're aluminum, aren't they?

Uh, aluminum is a metal.
My 1994 E36 calipers never ever rusted, either... There was only rust on the rotors.

Well, they do look more like made out of cast iron, not sure but there was definitely rust on them, even though easy to remove with a metal brush.

EDIT: Rust-Oleum makes a caliper paint as well... And they claim it can withstand up to 900F (The Dupli-Color only 500F):

I've used that on my previous car before, with a little sanding and priming that stuff will hold up pretty well. Used it to pain engine bay cover and a few other pieces that are prone to heat soaking.

If you want to color match with your car, G2 makes custom color match paint. I used it to match the BMW performance front brake calipers. The bbk for 128's come with unpainted rear calipers.

I've been happy with Rust O Leum products but I used duplicolor paint on my calipers. I do one autocross a year where I am on the brakes hard and repeatedly but only for less than 2 minutes a run. The duplicolor has done this 4 years now with no signs of coming off. So whatever temperature it will withstand seems to be adequate. I bought my paint mail order from JEGS.
