I'm still unclear on this and would love to see a consistent answer. iPOD Video has enough space for movies and such, it is connected via USB, so there must be some way of playing a video (while sitting on a ferry for two hours for example)

well I spoke to a uk dealer and the acm, USB video and tv retro fits aren't available here yet. He could see some notes against each part number and they are waiting to see how much demand there is over here plus there was a note saying the USB bit did not do iPod video

I've been reading around and haven't found anyone talking exactly about what I'm looking to do.

I have a 12/08 build and my Nav will play DVD's, just not without the parking brake set.

Is there a way to override this security feature so that I can play a DVD while driving on long trips???

I had an older 528 a couple of cars back. It had an early Nav unit in it. Old enough that it had a tube monitor, not an LCD. Turned out that it was a slightly converted euro Nav unit, and did find some strange button pressing sequence that enabled TV reception on it. Of course there as not a TV antenna, but you could play around with a few channels while travelling around town. No inputs, and the nav data came on a set of CDs. No DVD playing. But I did get TV for free. I learned that the next model year, the TV tuner was deleted from the nav systems that came to the US.

My 2009 135i with Nav does play DVD. But the hand brake has to be on for the video to be shown as a safety restriction. You can trick it by barely apply the hand brake and dare to watch the video while driving, lol.

That does not work. The car computer knows when it's moving and turns the display off even if the handbrake light is on.

Yes, it's also governed by the speed sensor.

Yes, you can have DVD whilst driving. tvInMotion does do that. I have it and my wife watches movies whilst I have fun driving. Keeps her occupied the entire drive.

europeanautosource.com has a product called TVinmotion that they say overrides the safety cutout of the DVD capability while a 1 is moving. I think the price is $189. I have no idea whether it works well but their Flash2pass garage door system gets good reviews.
