Options for spoiler adhesive tape?
I'm hopefully going to be installing a stock lip spoiler on my 128i, and was looking for some ideas of what tape to use.
I've used the 3m super high strength tape before to attach a europlate mounting bracket, and found it pretty good. But the tape can be kind of thick and I'd like to keep the gap between the spoiler and the trunk lid small. I don't want to use adhesive. Any recommendations, and any ideas on how many rolls I'll need to do the full length of the spoiler? |

i believe the thin version is called automotive grade 3m double sided tape. Not sure though

I also bought an OEM AW rear lip spoiler. I plan to use this: http://www.autogeek.net/3m-auto-tape.html
Found it at my local NAPA auto parts store. One roll is 5 feet long which should be more than enough. |

no gap will show.. I will recommend the following: a) clean and degrease the trunklid, all wax must come off b) measure 11,245 times and stick on once. c) the spoiler does not go on the edge of the deck lid odly enough, it is set back a bit. it also is centered on the trunk in a manner that lets it natural arch define the end points. d)i used blue painters tape to mark points all along the curve so it will be even. e) have 2 styrofoam blocks at the ready so as to place them on the corners and then use painters tape to tape them to the trunk. this puts pressure on the lip and holds the corners down which can peel up. f) tape down the spoiler every couple of inches g) do it at night, leave till morning under tape pressure... h) warm up / pre heat the spoiler before putting on.. ( just put it FLAT near your hot water heater or in your boiler room ) you can use a hairdryer if no access I) next morning clean off tape, quick wax and your done. If you have a used spoiler, the hardest part is to get the old tape off.. its a PITA then re-cutting the 3m tape to conform to the curve and point is also a PITA.. Good Luck !!

I just want to add to the instructions above about step B. You can mist the trunk lightly with a soap/water mixture so that you can move the spoiler around while you position it. Once you are satisfied, mist again with alcohol/water mixture to remove the soap mixture.

That's going to be a huge help, thanks for the instructions guys.
While I expect it's just the 3m stuff, I found BMW sells the tape for about 15 bucks a roll. I ordered that just to be on the safe side. |

There's not any kind of template available is there? I'd like to get it as close to the factory position as possible. I may be able to figure it out from pictures if not.

but like i said in my earlier post, there is a natural curve that you are forced to follow and still maintaining an equal distance from edge of trunk and distance from side of trunk.. once you lay it on the trunk without exposing the tape, youll understand.. I highly recommend looking at a 135 and seeing where it goes so its clear in your head..

Just expose a small portion of the sticky side of the tape, and take the plastic backer, and make a "tail" that you can pull out while you have the spoiler on the car. An inch or so will do just fine.
You can have like 4 or 5 tails and once you get the spoiler positioned you hold it down, and pull them out. This exposes the tape and it mates with the car, and you have no chance of misalignment. If you don't like the positioning, you can move it before you pull the tails as its only attached at a few points with very little tape. |

recieved my tape from BMW, part number 51628044186 I believe. It came with a roll of what looks like the 3m stuff (gray foam tape, red backing) but what was really nice is that it also comes with precut end pieces, shaped down to a point.
