Sunroof Danaged During Serivce

So I took my 128i in for service(Brakes, Oil, exc under warranty), and I don't know what they did, but they managed to scrape all the felt off of the sunroof seal, and now it looks like s**t.

They are trying to claim this is normal wear, so I'm not sure what to do, since it obviously wasn't there when I dropped it off. Anyone have any past luck in a situation like this?

Had something similar happen this year. I will NEVER let anyone else do work on my cars unless I physically can't.

Yep, I don't trust anyone to wrench on my car. Sometimes, not even myself. But I fear for the day that I need to do a clutch job. Unless I find myself a lift and transmission jack, I'm gonna be out like 2 grand and a week while wondering how much stuff might be getting damaged.

OP can you post any pics? I wonder how they even managed to do it..

I'll post a picture when I get home from work, but I'm pretty sure one of two things happened:

A) Something in the dealership car wash rubbed agonist the seal(even though it is supposedly touch less.

B) For god knows what reason, they decided to buff the top of the car around the sunroof

Management still says I'm out of luck, but the service advisor says if I make another appointment, he can "probably" get it warranty replace, but we all know what probably means lol

2 things:
  • Never ever let the dealer wash your car
  • Give your service advisor the opportunity to go to bat for you

Can't see the picture on mobile, might be working on Windows/Mac though.

EDIT: Opened the link separate (embedding broken) and wow that's substantial. It looks like they used a rotary tool to polish or something and took all the paint off the trim!

Yea, thats what I was thinking, must have been a buffer or rotary tool.....but it makes no sense because none of the service items had anything to do with the sunroof/top of car.......just a standard carwash as part of the oil change and brake job I had done.

Talked to the service manager again this afternoon, and they are saying their is nothing that can be done, and my only option is to pay $400 to get the seal replaced. .... :thumb down

Thinking about taking this issue to BMW.........

The only thing I can think of was there was maybe an accident while they had possession of the car. Maybe something happened where they put some scratches on the roof of your car and someone tried to cover it up by buffing out the scratches which caused the additional damage which they couldn't hide.

I've had two incidents with the dealer I get my car serviced. One was the tow hook cover on the rear bumper. I drove the car back from having service done and didn't notice it till a day or two later when I was washing my car. I contacted my SA and told him about it. He repainted the tow hook cover with no questions asked.

The next incident was a scratch across the cowl/hood. I noticed it a little after picking up the car but hadn't made it home yet. Called my SA again and he said to bring it right back. He took the car back to his detailer to buff out the scratch. It looked like the scratch was from when the tech was replacing the wiper blade.

I still go back to this dealer as crap happens and they've owned up to various issues they did to my car. The most expensive one which was not paint related was the instrument cluster. They didn't put any blame on me but was just trying to figure out if it could have been a manufacturing defect or if their tech actually did it. They also do an inspection of the car with a check list which identifies any issues damage to the car. So there's really no ambiguity on if they caused any damage to the car while they have it.

Definitely take it to BMW, and don't pay a dime! Why's it on you to clean up after their mess?

Was also able to look at the pic by opening a new window - that is NOT normal wear at all. Definitely pursue them for the damages.

Well good news!, after lots of arguing, and a few calls with the service manager, they finally agreed to replace the seal free of charge "as a one time courtesy" :thump:

The manager was professional, but clearly annoying, stating at the end, "most owners would not even be bothered about something as small as this".

Oh well lol

Well, he's right. The whole idea people view these cars as status symbols more than anything.

If I damaged the seal, it wouldn't be such a big deal to me. But they did it, so they get to deal with it . Glad you got it sorted out!!

Good that they are replacing it at no cost to you.

Good for you. I can't stand the statement "most owners...." I'm/you aren't most owners. We care. If they screwed it up and didn't return it in same condition and I don't like it fix it. Good to hear they rectified it. If they lived by the mantra of treating others possessions better than your own it wouldn't have happened.
