Seventh Level of Hell

Guarded by the Minotaur, who snarls in fury, and encircled within the river Phlegethon, filled with boiling blood, is the Seventh Level of Hell. The violent, the assasins, the tyrants, and the war-mongers lament their pitiless mischiefs in the river, while centaurs armed with bows and arrows shoot those who try to escape their punishment. The stench here is overpowering. This level is also home to the wood of the suicides- stunted and gnarled trees with twisting branches and poisoned fruit. At the time of final judgement, their bodies will hang from their branches. In those branches the Harpies, foul birdlike creatures with human faces, make their nests. Beyond the wood is scorching sand where those who committed violence against God and nature are showered with flakes of fire that rain down against their naked bodies. Blasphemers and sodomites writhe in pain, their tongues more loosed to lamentation, and out of their eyes gushes forth their woe. Usurers, who followed neither nature nor art, also share company in the Seventh Level.

Nah, the Divine Comedy is probably the greatest theological poem ever written...I wouldn't call it garbage

Most scholars agree that if there is a hell, Dante's Inferno is the closest we'll ever understand it to be. It's funny because Paradiso and Purgitorio are often dismissed. But the Inferno always grabs people's attention.

I think my favorite part (or at least the part I can remember the best) is how all the fortune tellers end up in hell with their heads torn off and sewn on backwards. That's what they get for trying to see what only God can see.

I also like how Dante incorporated many of the ancient mythical greek and roman creatures into parts of the medieval christian underworld.

Like I said, great stuff!

I think there was a map of Dante's inferno somewhere with where current celebrities would be.

You mean like the "Five Fingers of Death?" (circa 1973)

I get confused about this....biblically, don't people get judged on Judgement Day? So they wouldn't already be in Hell yet, would they?
Well, if this isn't, I guess Charon's rowing Milosevic down the River Styx right now. Given Shim's quotation [nice of him to think of the visually impaired] Ol' Slobodan's ticket has got to be marked with a big "VII".

Nah, you can go to hell. You just get rejudged for good on judgement day. Then you get thrown into the Lake of Fire, where your existence is erased.

Health Insurance Claim Evaluator [nervously]: Great, so I'm in?

St. Peter [consulting computer]: Well, there's good news and bad news.

Insurance guy: What's the good news?

St. Peter: You've met admission criteria for Heaven.

Insurance guy: Great! What's the bad news?

St. Peter: You've only been approved for a five day length of stay.

You'd have to think the lines would be longer to get into Hell...and the paperwork would be murder, what with all the lawyers there.
