Ok so I still have about another 600 miles to go before my car is broken in. I know normally the gas mileage will get better once it's broken in more. But so far the few times I've filled it up I've never gotten more than about 200mi out of a tank before the low fuel light comes on. Best average so far has been 19.6mpg with a mix of highway and city driving. Just wondering (other than highway driving) is this about the average best I can expect out of this car. Obviously I didn't buy it because its great on gas but I thought it might be just a bit higher. Or do we just have very small gas tanks relative to engine size lol.
BTW specs are 2013 135i 6speed manual 540 miles on the clock with temps ranging from 40s to the 60s throughout the day.

Yep sounds about right. I wish the fuel tank was a few gallons bigger.

Unfortunately the tank is only 13 gallons unlike the 3 series which had the bigger thank but what can you expect in a small car?

Try driving over here in Germany... the worse I ever got was 123 miles on ONE tank (~50L) 9mpg. The best was around 370 miles on a tank 27 mpg. I always seem to average about 19 mpg.

Oh lord, I thought I was the only one. I usually get around 240 on a tank before light comes on. Averaging between 19-22mpg. My friend who had a 335is before his M3, said he on an N55 engine was getting 27-28mpg. I thought something was wrong but I guess it's about right after reading this thread haha.

.....you have a better excuse for making even worse mileage because: vroom

If I don't play around, drive like I did before, i get the same mileage. I sit at 19.99999 frustratingly refusing to bump into the 20's unless i'm on a long trip on freeways without horrible traffic

Believe me dack I remember driving in Germany and how fast your gas goes. I used to hit autobahn 5 every morning to head into Heidelberg for school over on mark twain village. If I was going over 140k which I usually was going 160 then I needed gas after about 3 and a half days lol. They are pretty slow driving over here in Spain.

Well glad to see this has
Mileage is pretty normal and now I won't hold hold my breath expecting it to get better with more miles lol. 13 and something gallons is pretty small though. Not for the car size but for a 3.0 turbo six engine. It needs more of like a 17 or 18 gallon tank which is around what the 3er has I think. This reminds me of my friends old srt4 that he stuck a 50trim turbo on so it sucked gas and the tank was only 12.5 gallons. He's be down to half in a day lol

A few things I've noticed in my car:

1) As noted the tank is very small
2) The light goes on sooner than an other car I've driven. My light goes on at 1/4 tank.
3) Gas mileage deteriorated notably when they switched to the winter blend gasoline.
4) Overall my gas mileage is better than expected, of course depending on how you drive it. I get about 300 miles on a tank in normal driving.

I'm in the US and I drive a 2010 128i manual transmission and the worst I've gotten is 24 mpg dealing with daily commute with stop and go traffic. The best I've gotten is 30 mpg with straight highway driving at about 70-80 mph. I've done some tests and found that 60 mph seems to be a sweet spot and I used the real-time gas gauge to try and stay at 30 mpg and up. However that tends to get boring real fast. But driving habits determine how often you see the pump.

Lot of factors in MPG- mainly driving style- other factors- speed, highway versus city, tire air pressure, wheel alignment, weather- wind, rain and also air temperature. In my 128i automatic I get 24-25 mixed highway and city. On the highway I drive 70-80, temperatures where I am at range from 50-90 degrees- never too cold and the roads are flat and straight. Tires have 35 PSI. The car has only 2300 miles on it and I don't expect the MPG to improve, I'd be delighted if it did. The rating for the car is 18/28. In my 2011 MazdaSpeed 3 the rating is 18/25 and I get a whopping 29.7. I run 39/36 tire pressure, same driving style and roads as in the 128i. From the forums on the MS3 most others get around 19.

Mostly highway driving and I get 27mpg. I do punch it more than necessary to get around slower drivers.

Ya I'm sure most of you 128 guys are averaging probobly 5-7 mpg better than the 135. All of my previous bmws which were NA averaged between 25 and 28 highway usually and about 65mph was the sweet spot for the best mileage but that was too slow and I usually went 80 anyway.

I drive fast in my 128i when the roads are open or I pass slow drivers to make the roads open about 65% of the time. Mostly backroads/suburban driving. I expect 340-360 miles from full to empty(When the estimator reads 0 miles left in the tank)

I also average ~20 in my 135i in mixed city/highway driving (lots of full throttle acceleration). I certainly didn't buy this car for the mileage.

I took it on a rare trip the other weekend and for the first time tried to see how high of mileage I could attain. 340 miles each way, I made it on a single tank both ways, averaging in mid 26.x mpg and ~74mph (no stops except tolls). It was light traffic at night, so I didn't mind going a little slower. The hardest part was pulling away slowly from the toll barriers. IIRC, the peak boost for the trip was 1-2 psi.

I assume if I drove 65mph the whole way, I would have been into the solid 27s mpg, but it's really tough to drive that slow for long periods.

For those of you who are interested in fuel statistics, I would recommend checking www.fuelly.com. I personally keep track of all my fuel-ups. Very useful and kind of fun also.

That's weird. For me it was instantaneous and when I add fuel-ups it's very smooth. All my data is here.

My personal best on the highway in snowy conditions/mountains was 8.2L/100km which works out to a full tank would be 640km or about 400 miles.
