BMW N54 Twin Turbo Engine (335i engine) from 76th Salon De L'auto Geneve

This is "The Official 2006 BMW Twin Turbo N54 Engine" displayed at this year’s 76th Geneva Motor Show. You can see how little these turbos are by the size of my hand and fingers to represent some perspective. BMW successfully eliminated turbo lag by using smaller turbines.

just a technical note.

it is not a sequential turbocharging but each turbo serves to 3 cylinders separately.

I think that was very smart of BMW to do this, simply because they kept the small size of their inline-6, but significantly increased the hp, w/o decreasing the mpg. Thats also different how they placed the turbos at the back of the engine instead of in the front!

It's in real aspect ratio 1:1 size but with cutaways to view the inter-workings of the turbo and engine.

To the consumption reduction of approximately 10 per cent in the European Union test cycle contribute the full-variable valve gear VALVETRONIC, the double variable cam shaft control on the in and discharge opening side - called with BMW "BIVANOS" -, the electrical coolant pump as well as the regulated oil pump. The coupling of consumption and achievement broke through thus with this engine in sensational way. The most current example is the new Reihensechszylinder Bi turbo- engine, which celebrates its world premiere here in Geneva. In it is a maximum of sportyness. The innovative engine with the direct injection system "High Precision Injection" offers highest driving power with an output of 306 HP and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. There is probably no other engine of this performance class on the market, which is so easy and as compact as our new turbo engine.

I love that BMW shows an engine at an auto show, without putting it into a car.

Remaining hopeful to see it installed into an E92 in New York next month.

BMWO, You mentioned VALVETRONIC in Your post.
Does this mean, the Bi-Turbo-engine is equipped with this?
Or is this general speaking, because other BMW engines were also presented.
Do You have information about stroke and bore?

Those turbos will be a pain in the neck to replace. Also being at the back of the engine, wouldn't a lot of heat build up around the turbos causing failure??

If you can see the clutch at the rear, the turbos appear to be on the right side of the engine when placed into the engine bay of the E92. This will make for some decent airflow to the right-side of the engine where the turbos reside. Hope this gives you some insight gdnyc.

Let me get this straight, they added 2 turbos and only got another 50 horsepower out of the car?

Doesn't that seem low to you guys?

Changing the ECU on a 2000 A4 1.8T nets an extra 50 horsepower just by upping the PSI on the turbo.

The turbos dont run at the same time. They are sequential, one for lower RPMs and one for higher RPM. Its probably got a lower PSI for preventing premature engine damage. Its a smart thing to do. The extra power will allow us to . with the same power as IS350, BMW claims 0-60 times of 5.7 secs, I suspect it will be faster with a manual transmission.

Keep in mind BMW reduced the compression ratio of the engine by a fair amount in order to install and utilize these turbos. If I had to guess I would say without the turbos the engine in base form with reduced compression but with the addition of direct fuel injection would make somewhere around 220 bhp. Keep in mind this is purely speculation on my part. But 40 hp from each turbo seems reasonable to me.

I am sure BMW also chose to run a very small amount of boost on these turbos in the name of engine reliability. Maybe a half bar at most, if that.

If anyone else has some more technical knowledge on the subject please enlighten me.
