In my previous cars, the fan usually goes on when the engine is in need of cooling. This happens even after you turn off the engine.

Probably because you were driving it hard and the engine generated a lot of heat. The fan is now automatic and comes on even after you have shut of the engine and parked.

this freaks me out the first time

no. sometimes you touch the hot pot, not knowing it was hot. if you knew it was hot i doubt you put a finger there. in your situation, you had a feeling it was gonna explode but yet you still stood there?? so if you see a live dynamite and the fuse is lit, would you still stand there to see if it will explode?? ...just messing with you.

How long will the battery last with all these gizmos? Not only did my fan stay on yesterday for the first time, but I programmed the hvac to turn on automatically every day at 7:55 am and 4:55 pm through i-Drive.
