I wouldn't have went "back in time" but to each his own. Enjoy your E39 M5. It sure as heck looks better than the E60 M5.

Original clutch on it? Make sure to have it checked out. e39 m5 clutches are notoriously weak for a 400hp car.

I would bet that a large majority of M5 owners don't drive the car hard at all. Sure there are some that are owned by younger people that drive them hard, but I bet the majority of them are sold to 50+ year olds that don't drive them hard at all.

There's an '01 M5 on patch Bks for sale, $27,000, but it's eurospecs... Who want's to take a loan out on a car that you can't even take back to the states???
DAMN Beautiful car though, placard says it has an exhaust kit and a "short throw" shifter

About a year ago, I saw a Euro-spec'ed '03 540 (very rare) with 120,000km's on it, for sale on Panzer Brks (next to the bowling alley). I thought to myself, good luck trying to sell that thing.

yeah! I agree, get US Specs M's that you can bring home, but you wont mostly likely to find those there, unless someone brought it from here, and doesnt want to take it back home, but get a new one instead.

47 here. I drive it pretty hard at times, but always with great mechanical respect for the car. I've got the M5 setup just perfect now: Dinan springs, Konis, Ground Control camber plates, Dinan rear sway bar, 9.5" rims with 275/35's up front (no stagger), R-compounds -- awesome handling.

VIR turn 3 (still had stock springs here, but did have wide fronts and camber plates already):

On the way to a 1st place trophy at the BMWCCA Oktoberfest Autocross on VIR Patriot course:

Regarding miles...mine has 30k miles on it now (never driven in rain if I can help it, and I don't drive it everyday...got the ZHP for that), and I've had very few issues (knock on wood). I never plan to sell it.

So beautiful, such a perfect beast.

I just can't drive a car that averages 12 mpg.

I've only ever seen gas mileage that low (and lower) at VIR track events. Last weekend I had to disconnect the battery to install an ICELink iPod adapter, so it reset my computer mileage counters. I've been driving it this week, combination of around town and highway, and I just checked them on the way home tonight...19.8 mpg. A few weeks back on a trip across NC on cruise control at 76mph for more than an hour, the M5 achieved 24.8mpg -- not bad at all for 76mph average speed. So it's not as much of a gas hog as people think. Now if you're enjoying the 400hp all the time, you pay for it of course. I've seen single digit mpg at VIR in addition to almost 145mph on the back straight.

Gorgeous car and color. The E39 is one of the finest lines BMW has ever built - and the M5 is, of course, the finest example of the E39.

Congratz, hope your M5 holds up well. Come back to E90 Hood when you feel the urge to shift again.
