Oil Change; been a year, but only 3k miles...

N52, had the oil changed at the dealer a year ago next week. The thing is, I have only put 3k miles on the car since. Is there a reason to go in for another change?? Believe it or not, the car is daily driven on weekdays.

Previous owner of my car went 2 yrs without a change (10,000km if I remember right = ~6000 miles) and then put it up for sale. I changed the oil the day after I bought it, trust me, get it changed lol.

Sounds like you make a lot of very short trips. Short trips are hard on oil, since you never get the oil up to temp to drive off the fuel dilution. Fuel dilution kills oil (breaks it down), so I would go ahead and have your oil changed.

I change my oil every 5000 km, so you would be nearly due for a change if you followed my schedule.

And ya, short trips will KILL the oil fast.

My commute to train station is 3.3 miles each way, so 7 miles round trip. And I only do it 4 days a week. On the weekend, we primarily use my wifes SUV. So yes, lots of short trips. Thanks for the input guys, i will go ahead and schedule an oil change.

Time is a luxury my friend, no time for the long way to work. In the spring summers I do simply go out just to drive on the weekends.

I know what you mean. My commute is only 8 miles one way, but at least with my kids in sports, I have to do some longer trips on the weekends. I try to change my oil every 6-7,000 miles or so. I am doing UOA's to check my oil at every change though, to eventually find the best OCI for my driving habits.

I did this last year. Was under a 1 oil change interval, but I would still change it out habit at least 2x a year ( fall and spring). I guess because Winter oil may have more metal and particles because of those cold harsh starts.

The previous summer though, I ended up changing it early and often, like every 1.5 months

Check your battery and get a trickle charger... You don't want to get burned like I did.

I live in SoCal, but I have an N52 (N52B30, to be exact)... Maybe because I had to order the car to get a 6MT...?

BMW recommends a low mileage oil change interval of 12 months, so if you're still under warranty, it should be covered by the free maintenance plan. I've had to take advantage of this before. I have 32K or 33K miles on my 128i that I've owned for 5 years.

My opinion is that BMWs maintenance schedule is all out of whack.

Apparently lifetime coolant, PS fluid, diff fluid, and tranny fuild... I disagree. That stuff has to be replaced sometime into the car's life. Usually before 100k miles.

Its funny how people ask why BMWs always seem to have leaks, when its because fluids are not be changed regularly or at such extreme scheduling.

Then oil changes are 15k miles or 1 year. I say every 7k miles. The oil might last a while, but the filters definitely do not.
