nachob,

I'm not jumping at all. I'm sitting down actually
I don't disagree with you.
The 1M isn't a great track car, but a good one.
One that most amateur track enthusiasts would enjoy IMHO. At least in MDM mode if safely.

Personally, I don't like it being tail happy, I have no interest in drifting or sudden "surprises", but I can be fixed if wanted.
I do like the engine. No, not if you want to rev an engine to 9000 rpm and beyond, but loads of torque is fun too.
Use the torque Luke
Understeer? Yes, like most modern cars, but more than E90/92M or E46M? I'm not sure. Either way, that can be fixed too if wanted.

It's fun on the track and many are tracking it but it's strength is that it's a blast on the street. At this point it seems like you are just looking for something to jump on so I'll leave it at that.

Best wishes.
However, a certain highly-modified but street legal 1M has won "Fastest Street Car" at Grassroots Motorsports Ultimate Track Car Challenge at VIR two years running. It also did extremely well at this year's One Lap of America.

The 1M takes greater driver skill to hussle around a track quickly -- mostly due to the combination of torque and short wheelbase -- but it is extremely satisfying to do so!

I have nothing but love and admiration for the 1M and I will just say it is a great car...period.. I didn't know about the fastest street car challenge. That is awesome. I found the 1M to be a handful, requiring a lot of throttle discipline and felt the tail sidestepping a regularly and some understeer so I guess I never considered it a great track car but I didn't care. These qualities made it exciting on the street where it spends 99.999999% of it's time. If in fact it is a great track car then it probably has to do with the driver and I am not the greatest driver so if the community of better drivers than me feels it is a great track car, then that is one more distinction that only adds to my love for the last BMW gunfighter.

Our esteemed friend Metak dropped this bomb awhile back...

I expect the M2 to be a better technical car than the 1M.

I don't think it will be a more spiritual car, though. For a lot of us petrol-heads more refinement equals a diminished driving experience.

Now that being said, I've had a deposit down since January 2014 and I will spec the car similarly to my 1M and I'll spec it manual with the creature comforts. I'll most likely move myself down the list in hopes of a CSL variant (I like rare cars) and hope for a test drive. The 1M was bought sight unseen though.

Well, to be fair... I made that comment over 2yrs ago based on the M2 speculation news at the time. But here is what I said to back up that statement. Keep in mind the word "better" can be a pretty subjective word

3. The steering in the 1M is straight from the M3, will BMW improve on this with the M2? Doubtful.

4. Handling. The complete M3 underpinnings put the 1M on par with the M3 even though it was a little more "exciting" due to the shorter wheelbase, but that is part of the appeal with the 1M.

So the way I see it, BMW would have to make the M2 a lot lighter, I'm talking 3200lbs at least and they would have to put in an I6 TT. That would just entirely cannibalize the M3/4 and BMW will never do that. So at best, they might get the weight to the 1M's but whatever engine they put in will still fall short of the ridiculously underrated 1M's powerplant.

The parts used to enhance the 135 into a 1M were not leftover pieces of scrap metal, it was the best bits M division had in it's arsenal at the time.

Stands to reason they'll use the M4 as blueprint. Make it a little smaller, a little less powerful and cheaper (by removing the fancy cooling, carbon bits and options list).

Although no details on the forthcoming M2 yet. My local dealer emailed yesterday saying they are now taking deposits on the new M2 and would I like to put one down.

Exactly this.

I don't think that the M2 will be better that 1M. Time will tell of course but i don't.

the rendering on the front page is horrific....lol...and scott26 says it is "98.9%" correct. that is worrisome...

I'm sure it will be a performer...but that colour of blue is just as horrific as the styling. Reminds me of a blue from the 1990s.

It's going to have black leather with blue stitching....I had that on my old 135is....like our orange stitching sooooo much more.

According to the spec sheet----NO alcantara like the 1M. Carbon fiber...another minus IMO.

I however glad that they are carrying some 1M spirit by only offering 4 colours and 1 interior option....a shame they are offering automatic transmission and sunroof choices though....a dilution IMO.

Just had a look in my crystal ball on the main differences between M2 vs 1M specs:

+ Better fuel economy
- Less iconic appearance

So what if the M2 was very close to this 'Cup' car?

the rear fender might look like that...but the front definitely won't and the front bumper is TOTALLY different on the M2 (see the spy shots and recent renderings)

It'll look like this, Attachment 1279053 which is better, but by far not as iconic as the 1M

I think the M2 test mules and digital renders have so far looked fantastic.
My problems with the 235 are centered around the rear end - just looks kind of blah to me. From what I've seen so far, the M2's wider stance, quad exhaust, and new bumper fix all that.

Still, I love the 1M's boxiness. The front end's relatively square-ish design elements remind me more of the e30 M3 than any other modern BMW.
And the rear end is just awesome.

SCOTT26 has been wrong before. I remember when he said the 1M's rear seats would be FIXED and not foldable due to extra chassis bracing. That was false.

I guess in time(January) we will see.

Better reveal of M2 on news. Nice looking car but not nearly as aggressive or unique as the 1m. Definitely wouldn't trade for it. Have a feeling given the appearance of the M2, the 1m will hold its value well.

It will be a better car by numbers and if I didn't have 1M my first choice but it doesn't do much for me. It's ok and the 1M Simple no nav cockpit really turns me on. It's beautiful compared to all new bloated cockpits. Also the styling looks a little too angular and busy. Great car and my respect for it but I just passed on m2 for 1M and happy.

agreed. the M2 looks totally ordinary thus far.....will wait to see the final reveal but the 1M already looked insane by this time prior to its reveal....

I see the 1M to M2 transition as similar to the E30 M3 to E36 M3 transition....

I'm interested to see what journalists say when they inevitably compare the two in their M2 reviews. I'm willing to bet they'll echo what we feel already.

I hope they say the M2 is great and it makes the 1M look like shit.

After the dust settles, I'll buy another 1M at a reduced price

The value of my e30 M3 tanked when the e36 M3 came out. With 1Ms in even fewer numbers, I doubt that will happen.
