Finally coming around to post my experience. As there have been many other threads covering the awesome experience that is PCD, I will refrain from a super detailed write up and humbly submit my photo experience with some of my concluding thoughts. I only had a point and shoot, so please forgive the less than stellar images.

Just some quick notes on the night before. The Marriott was nice. It’s your standard fare Marriott, if you’re a road warrior, you know the layout. The dinner at the hotel restaurant, Giatu, was really nice. The Campanelle Rustica is definitely recommended. Really wish the risotto was available on the special “BMW” menu. And the breakfast buffet the next morning was excellent as well. Actually met Poppy4 and his wife in the elevator on the way down to breakfast. We asked them what they were picking up – a BSM 1M. Well then, instant camaraderie! On the shuttle ride over is when I found out that there were five 1Ms being delivered that day and in all three colors. Everyone was quite giddy!

As you walk in, the adrenaline does start flowing.

We sat down and met our driving instructors for the day, Ray Helms, Donnie Isley and Andy VanCleef (drove the 1M at the Monticello press launch). They ran through the basic driving tips on the track and the impressive BMW stability controls systems. They also reminded us that these weren’t our cars, so no need to be timid with them on the track

They weren’t kidding about brief. In literally 10 mins we were headed from the “classroom” to the track. A wall of fame leading out to the cars. Hey, I recognize some of those guys…

All the pretty cars lined up ready to go! I wanted to get the one with the racing stripes

A couple of fellow 1Mers getting ready to have some fun! It was funny because they told us to hop into “your” car, driver and guest (everyone got to take out the same kind of car they purchased) and we were all like, um no driving instructor? Nope! They used mounted radios in the car to give instructions, no ride-alongs necessary. Suffice it to say, a few of us were geeking out at the prospect of given free rein in a car we’ve never sat in let alone had a test drive!

First up for my group, the skid pad! Andy VanCleef was our group’s driving instructor and he lead us out onto the skid pad in a 335i that we’d all get a turn at doing 360s on watered-down, polished concrete.

The pics can’t really capture the drama of being told to floor it (with all the traction controls turned off). In doing so, the car immediately spun out. Something I’ve never experienced in a car. I can see how it would be terrifying on a highway with barricades and other cars speeding by you. After seeing what happens without all the traction controls on, we turned on the dynamic stability control and I was told to do the same thing, floor it. This time, no 360s. The car just kept going around the circle with the accelerator mashed down. I was impressed. It was a definite eye-opener to what these systems are really doing for you other than annoyingly lighting up when taking a corner too aggressively.

Next up for our group after everyone had their turn on the skid pad (yes, even the guests got to participate, they do everything you do) was the emergency braking runs. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get any photos of this little bit of fun as we thought we’d have some time to get out and take some shots, but the activity was thoroughly engaging and neither one of us thought of getting the camera out.

Essentially this consisted of getting the car up to around 40 and 50 mph, hitting a certain point down the road and then standing, and I mean literally standing, on the brakes. Mashing the pedal all the way to floor. Let me tell you, the 1M has some serious brakes. The exercise was designed to demonstrate the anti-lock braking system and how much steering control you can maintain while fully braking. Remember, you go where you’re looking, so try to look for escape routes, not directly at the thing you’re about to hit.

Following the emergency braking fun, it was onto the serious stuff! The handling track! Yes, that’s right, time to race my car around a tight little track. And it was tight. No long straights so you’re not getting up to any crazy speeds (probably a max of 75-80 mph) then into some nice turns and esses. FUN.

So after all the groups rotated through the various driving exercises, we all came back to do a hot lap in the M5 before we split off for either the plant tour or taking delivery.

We did our hot lap with Ray Helms. Here’s a link to a youtube video that shows the exact experience we had.

Again, not my video, but the same even nearly the same commentary. But don’t let the video fool you, it was NOT as sedate as that mounted camera would lead you to believe.

While waiting for the others to get tossed around in the M5, I spotted some celebrities.

Oh snap, a Ring Taxi – yes, I had some inappropriate thoughts of Sabine Schmitz and doing a few laps around the Nürburgring.

A shot with Andy VanCleef our group’s driving instructor and it turned out, my delivery specialist.

Following the hot lap madness, the group split up with half going to take delivery and the other half taking a tour of the Spartanburg plant. Since my group was going to tour the manufacturing plant first and tour the Zentrum museum and we had not taken delivery of our own cars yet, we all got an X5 to drive over to the plant. They didn’t allow pics on the plant tour so we left our camera in the car and unfortunately I can’t share what kind of awesomeness went on in the manufacturing plant. Here’s a link (http://www.bmwusfactory.com/) to some details about the facility. Long story short, it was pretty damn impressive. You see the “ultimate factory” shows on cable and think that’s pretty cool. Then you see it in person. Whoa. Now here’s a question, what kind of awesome craziness is going on in the factory that builds all the awesome robots manufacturing the cars?

So we leave the factory tour and jump back into the X5s and head to the off-road course. After taking a quick spin, yeah, these things are more capable than you think!

Lunch time! Then… delivery time!

Some fellow 1Mers looking over their freshly delivered cars.

There was a chap (MR///M3) and his lady friend taking delivery of a dead sexy red M3. I hope he offset some monies for the speeding tickets. I mean, just parked the thing looks like it deserves a moving violation.

Looking over some sexy back… oh, wait what’s over there?

A couple of caged beauties.

Why, hello there.

What’s your name?

She’s going home with me!

Starting to get familiar with each other.

Andy going over all the fine details.

4 miles on the clock. Not too shabby.

As it should be, 3 pedals and a stick.

Yes, there’s that idrive thingy.

Oh so comfy.

The lady and I.

It’s finally the end of the day and time to make our way home. A little painter’s tape to protect against chips and scratches on the 400 mile drive back home before I could put on some proper paint protection.

And now Emma Grace has made it home. I do hope this is the beginning to a long and happy forever after.

Overall, the whole delivery experience was pretty impressive and one heck of an introduction to the brand. It really is a great way to establish that brand loyalty right off the bat with the unadulterated joy everyone has on their special delivery day. I can’t imagine what the M driving schools would be like. Hopefully it won’t be too long till I find out.

But a great, great, great experience! Made all that much more memorable by the fantastic people and fellow enthusiasts that you meet. Yes, awesomely epic.

I recommend getting the 2" and 3" if you can find it. The 3" works well for the bigger surfaces while the 2" is good for the finer detail.

Best of all, it took all of 15 minutes to take it off the next day and without a single smudge or blemish.
I appreciate the tips. I have a 2" x 60' roll of the blue stuff right here. I think I'm only going to do the hood and mirrors. I don't think I'll go nuts on the front bumper, just a few key areas.

Not really. Even for someone who doesn't give a crap that's an amazing amount of wear and tear, plus it's not as if shifting badly like that is faster or better.

I was just there Nov. 16th and did the exact same thing. What a blast!
I went with my dad for the trip and we picked up his VO 1M and did the performance drivers school. My younger brother (who owns a pristine diamond black E30 M3) lives in Greenville. My brother and I had one of those VO 1M's(possibly the same cars as in the photos above) and my dad had a VO 1M that was exactly the same except it had the performance drivers school graphic in white on the doors.

Summary: What a blast! Not too much to say. The tires were toast after the handling course!
Our instructer Jim came up racing professionally in an E30 M3. Really cool. He sat with us for lunch and we talked E36's E46's and E30's...and of course the 1M & the new F10 M5. He said they replace the tires on these driving school cars on a daily basis. Not a surprise. It was an awesome experience! I was on the skidpad driving that 335i (as seen in the photos posted) It's the instuctor's car. I had a X5 on the off-road course. That was cool, but I'll probably never own an sav or suv.

Ultimate experience.

I have a blue water metallic/light grey 11' 128i convertible, and I'm strictly a flawless paint-job, concours-type guy. Still like riding in M cars. There's 3 M cars in my immediate family. Not sure if a 1M owner will respect my 128i vert, but I sure respect the 1M's. I plaster video links all over my facebook wall!

We spent the week in Greenville after the pickup, and stayed with my brother. At the end of the week we took my brother along for a trip back home (PA) for Thanksgiving break. The 1M was Green-Frog Taped. Pedestrians gave us weird looks the entire way home.

Now weeks later the 1M is pretty much in hibernation and I'm off starting a new job which started almost 2 weeks ago.

Not a chance to post all my pics as fast as you guys...but I'll get em' up.

Regards,

Amen brother! Nothing wrong with your images. It's the guy/gal behind the camera not the equipment that matters. You got some really nice shots in there!

Maybe the '12/2 PCD' group can have their reunion at 'M school!'

From Sergeremi's update above...

" They also reminded us that these weren’t our cars, so no need to be timid with them on the track "

Please also note that guests participate... so for every "driving enthusiast" there is a 50 percent chance that a "non enthusiast" SO (significant other.... no genders slandered here!) will be along.

okay boss... Still unconvinced? Don't mind if I get back to you when the first customer car goes in for a clutch?
I bet you that the customer car has FAR more miles than these cars.

Anyone have a mileage on the slipping clutch cars? Donnie?

I doubt it's mileage that's doing it. I would guess those 1M's have less than 15000 miles on them. Most people that go to "M" School and PCD are not hard core racers that have mastered the clutch. I would bet that most are people with decent amounts of disposable income that like to THINK they are good drivers and want to go fast on a track environment likely for the first time. I am continually amazed at people that talk a big talk at a DE/AutoX/PCD and end up being the most timid drivers on the track you've ever seen.

Sharing PCD with the rest of the "12/02" group was fantastic. It was a pleasure meeting everyone in person. As other reviewers have mentioned, everything about the PCD experience was great. BMW does a top-notch job!

For those of you thinking about using Trakk Tape, it worked really well. I only had to make a short 100 mile trip back to Charlotte, but I had no serious issues...though around 80 mph, some tape started to peel back a bit. I left it on through Monday when I got the PPF installed. The only downside to the tape was that it took awhile to install, especially with all the curves, nooks, and crannies on the front bumper.

exactly... the simple fact is that the majority of people attending PCD have probably NOT done a.. a Car Control Clinic... Street Survival... an autocross, or a DE. While they may be automotive enthusiasts... the mere purchase of an M car and then doing PCD doesn't mean that they have Launched a car HARD ... slammed on the brakes HARD enough to engage ABS..... mastered (or even tried) heel and toe... etc...

From this thread alone.. It seems like we have 8-10 participants that have never done this before. Note this is not a character assessment or assassination.. just stating that it's not a big surprise to see extremely premature clutch wear given the conditions/drivers.. I can only imagine the number of clutches roasted on the entrance to the wet skid pad.

I also think that expecting BMW PCD folks to keep up with every roasted clutch... is probably a little much. Especially when the driver may not even know that they are the one that used up that last bit of clutch.... or may not beso thoughtful as to tell someone that the clutch on a car is failing.

We all know that the delays for PCD have been long.. There are a finite # of PCD vehicles.. So.. taking each car out of service immediatey surely affects that. With slots booked weeks in advance.. there has got to be a limited amount of time to take a car out of rotation to get serviced.

Actually, the very first exercise is ABS as in Slam THE BRAKES HARD AND STEER. Everyone gets about 5 runs at that before moving to the track.

Not sure why you would assume that the people doing PCD on this thread have never driven a car in anger though. Nothing in there indicates it.

Nope.

I didn't take it personally at all. You don't know me and I don't know you so we're free to make all sorts of assumptions about each other.

I'll keep my assumptions about you to myself.

Sergremi's pictorial essay on the 12/2 PCD is fabulous and, as I was there with him, accurate. I appreciate the time he took in putting it together.
As for wear and tear on the track vehicles, I believe I heard our lead instructor tell us that all the 1M's were just renewed and set up for some soon to be completed event. My VO was in perfect condition and I drove the hell out if it, even going off the track at on point trying to slide into a corner. Fun fun fun! Not your car they kept telling us. I took it seriously.
It was a special treat to bond with the other 1Mers and I would gladly participate in a 12/2 PCD reunion as suggested by BG, if the young guys don't mind racing with an old guy (me)?
One last thing, I drove home,750 miles, without tape, with no issues whatsoever.
