N54 in the 1M does have heat soak issues. At a minimum you would need to upgrade the intercooler. As for the e9x M3, the s65 has cooling issues if you get it with a DCT which will require larger oil and DCT coolers.

The only additional cooling the 1m has is the ppk2 kit. Fan, 2nd radiator and minor ducting. Same stuff that comes standard on a 135is. Oil cooler is the same as the 135i. HPFP is a minor issue with our cars. The software / new pumps and extended warranty on them has largely eliminated the issue. We do see a few issues here and there but it is nothing like a few years ago. We have seen a few cases of HPFP going in 1M's and even in N55 cars but it was no where at the scale that affected early n54 cars.

Yeah man. The m3's have gotten very affordable.

Scrap the 1 series track car idea. Best bet for a track dedicated build would be an e46 m3. If you want to spend some more money then go the e92 m3 route. That being said, don't build a track car. Buy a used one that has a proven track history. You will save big $$.

very wealth information and opinions from everyone.

i had stage3 08 e92 6mt(fmic,dp,tune,cp, DV..etc) back in the day and got it lemoned due to HPFP(BMW replaced the 3pumps) so i am hesitated to go with n54 again. Glad i asked here.

however, aren't those s65 also have their known issue like rod bearing just as s54?

Yup, rod bearings are hot topic for the S65s :

IIRC upgrades are available, but I haven't read into it enough to comment on how effective the fix is.

Rod bearings is an issue with the s65 but very preventable. Many people do oil analysis but I personally will just be changing rod bearings every 40k miles. Its a $2500 job to do bearings. Other than bearings the s65 has been rather rock solid. I am confident an n54 will require equal if not more than $2500 in 40k miles, which isnt a detriment to the n54, just a loose example that both motors require preventative upkeep.

I pulled rod bearings out of my 09 motor which had 27k miles and swapped in some WPC treated rod bearings. The original bearings didnt show any signs of excessive wear and would have easily lasted another 40k miles.

I have two cars with s65's and rod bearings are not ruining my fun.
