Winter Tire Question
I know it's still summer but I'm already looking at buying winter tires for my 135i for the winter. I don't know too much about tire sizes and rim widths but can someone confirm that 225/40 will fit on 261M rims. I have read that some have put this square set-up even on the staggered 261M rims. Will this work? That's what I'm planning to do.
Also can anyone recommend a good set of winter (not all season) tires. Winters in Vancouver isn't too bad but I do plan to drive up to Whister in the winter. Thanks CM |

225/40 all around is what most usually run for winter.

I'm curious about the Pirelli Winter 240 Sottozero Serie II. It weighs 4lbs less than the Blizzak LM60, is rated for 149mph, and is $31 cheaper. I know the LM60 is great but is the Sottozero worth a look? This is my first winter in Germany so I don't have any first-hand experience with winter driving conditions.

I'm in almost the same situation as you and finely came to a conclusion:
Nokian Hakkapeliitta R! The price is a bit higher than those x-ice and blizzak but are way better and you keep good handelling!! The others drive so bad! I purchest somme BMW M6 copies and went down to 17inches. The tires are going down to 205 in width to get better traction. I live in Quebec and the whinters are worse here but i think this is the best all whinter tires. But if you whant a perfect handeling tire and trade off somme grip (depending on how much snow you realy drive in), I would go with the Dunlop winter sport 3D or the Michelin Pilot Alpin http://www.nokiantires.com/tyre?id=11949

After a bit of research I decided to give the Pirellis a try. They should be here the middle of October.

I've been buying from them for years. Good prices and great customer service, and they have no problem shipping to APO. Speaking of great customer service, I just got an email: the Pirellis won't be at the warehouse till early November. I'm going to have to switch my order to the Blizzaks (thanks Tire Rack!). I was really looking forward to giving the Pirellis a try but with the shipping time to APO and then installation, I can't wait. |
