Dash Cam

Does anyone use a dash cam? I'm considering getting one since my neighbors have been hitting my bumper when they parallel park.

I see that some higher end cameras such as the panorama 2 or blackVue have a parking mode that uses a small amount of power from the car's battery to keep it powered, but it has to be hardwired in that case.

I'd love to hear some feedback from people with experience using dash cams and specifically the parking mode.

Thanks

The blackvue is really sensitive to motion so be ready for it to be on a lot when the car is off but if you want to bust them then I guess you don't have much choice.

I have the blackvue. Haven't hard wired it yet. Still running it out of the cigarette charger. It has a nice reminder when the car turns off so I haven't forgotten to unplug it yet.

Video quality is good and easy to setup. Comes with everything you need as well.

Have iTronics hardwired and it records 24hrs in parking mode before auto shut down. Always try to back into a parking spot so the camera captures everything in front of me.

I feel like dash cams are must nowadays.

Unfortunately, with all of the people texting while driving and doing other stupid things, it's never a bad idea to be safe.

I use this dash cam: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It works well at a good price.

What was needed to hardwire? Do you ever have the battery discharge warning pop up since the hardwire?

I need this to be fully operational during an overnight park so I think hardwire is a must. I was also looking into getting like a portable jump station and plug into the cig lighter outlet. Then I wouldn't need to hardwire.

How big is your flash card? I think another thing I need to consider is that I don't recycle the flash card data during an overnight park.

Did you buy through blackboxyourcar dot com? They seem to be a legit retailer for a few brands of dash cams. Did you get the two channel so you have a camera in the rear window? BlackVue has a very tempting two channel setup and seems easy to run the wire in the headliner to reach the back window.

I think the cig lighter has a relay that turns the juice off after a few minutes with the car off. You may be able to leave it plugged in all the time.

Do you know how much memory is used in a typical night of being in park mode with low-med activity (i.e. side street with a car going by every 15-30 min)?

Never a discharge warning, 32gb card (limited by the camera)

I just have the front camera. I have the box and stuff to hardwire it. Just haven't had the time to do it.

I feel a dash cam attract more attention from thieves? But in places like China or Russia I heard it is a must.

I'm sure it does. I hardly notice myn. But I have an all black car and the cam is black. And myn is tucked up top near the top of the rear view mirror.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the BlackVue DR650GW 2 channel system with cell link B battery pack to keep 72hr charge while in park mode without draining my car battery. I'll let you guys know how it works out once installed.

By the way Blackboxmycar dot com is a great business to deal with.

One last question...does our car turn off power to the cig outlet after the engine is turned off? If so, is there any way to provide continuous power to the outlet?

Is that Cellink B basically just a lithium rechargeable usb battery pack? Like any of the ones from Amazon? I used a 15000mah pack for mine, but dunno if I got 72 hours from it! So you are not hard wiring anymore? If so, I might be interested in that battery pack.

Yeah, I'm not hardwiring and will use the battery pack. I'm pretty sure its a lithium ion based battery that can withstand extreme temps without exploding. It also has a circuit that will shut off the draw from the car battery if it reaches a setpoint to prevent draining the car battery (that's in the off chance you're parked for a few days and actually drain the battery pack first).

I just need to know how to keep the power at the cig outlet even after the engine is off. Anyone know? I'm assuming there is a relay controlled by the ECU?

Your vehicle has three basic systems for the vehicle in relation to the key; the accessory system, the run/on system and the constant power system. Accessory is the first notch when you turn the key (single push of the start button with foot off the brake). It will not stay on all the time. You would need to re wire your cig lighter to the fuse box or battery (or tap a constant 12v+ wire)

You can buy female cig plugs with a pos/neg wire coming out to tap into a system. All you would need to do is wire the red to constant power (battery) and the black to ground. Then plug your cig lighter for the camera in and route the wire.

Looking to add a power pack to my Blackvue 650GW as well. Probably either the Cellink Battery B or the Anypower T-Power Plus. Currently I'm using power magic pro hard wire into the fuse box but seems to be draining my car battery too much with low battery discharge warning. My car battery was at 11.6V when the warning came on. I set my powermagic to cut off at 11.8V.

Since the fuse box is behind the glove box, you can wire everything there and leave the battery pack inside.

I installed the DR650 and Cellink B today. Very easy to install and works great. I'll try to take some pics of the final install.

120V outlet doesn't draw power when the car is off, so it really doesn't matter if you unplug the cam or not.

So how does this battery pack work? When the engine is on is it charging the battery pack and the dash cam gets power from the vehicle 12V or is it getting from the battery pack while it's getting charged at the same time?

When engine is off, does the battery pack supply the power until it is discharged, then the vehicle 12V battery kicks in until the specified cut off voltage then shuts off or vice versa?

When the engine is on the 12v outlet is powering the camera and charging the battery. Battery reaches full charge in an hour (I always reach full charge during commute which is nice). A full charge lasts up to 72 hrs and I've been seeing about 48 hrs.

When the engine is off the dash cam battery pack supplies the dash cam until it is drained. Once drained that's it. Never pulls from the car battery because the 12v outlet loses power when engine is off. Now this is only one way to wire it. The battery also has the ability to be hard wired to the car battery which means it will pull from the car battery until the car battery reaches 12v then the dash cam battery will shut off to prevent draining the car battery.
