Anyone know where the oil level sensor is and how it works. I was thinking if the fill method might affect the possibility of an air bubble, then we might need to be careful about stuff like having to level the car, fill with a tube, etc. This might account for the somewhat erractic readings that Danny was getting. And it could be bad news if we overfilled as a consequence.

I'm specifically looking for the specific ramps you used, as well as tools, etc.
Ramps purchased at sears for $29.99

Strap Wrench purchased at sears for $12.99

17mm Snap-On Socket and Ratchet
BMW Oil Filter $18.00
BMW Oil $48.00(12 quarts)

That's it. I was going to use my old Redline Oil that I have left from my old car, but wasn't sure if it meets BMW's LL-01 standards, so I played it safe and went with BMW's factory stuff. Have fun and post back with any questions/concerns.

Not having to worry about metal shavings in my pistons -- priceless.

with talk of metric and imperial, funny how things soundso much better in imperial like 17, 18 or 19 inch tyres BUT with 235, 245, 255 etc mm tyre width on 8 or 8.5 inch wheels.

we don't bat an eye lid then.

same with a person's height. somehow it's easier to visualise a 6 foot tall person instead of 180 cm tall person.

go figure.

I'm happy to help if I can! Let us know how it goes for you. You'll swear the car drives better after the change, and even if it's all in our heads, it feels good anyways!

I'm at 5,800 miles now, and noticed that my oil was down 1/4 quart from full for the first time since new, so thinking I might as well change the oil rather than just fill it with 1/4 quart. So you did end up using ramps and had no issues? Did it lift the front of the car enough to get under there?

Thanks!

Dave(?), I thought just by looking at the ramps that they wouldn't be tall enough but they work fine! There's plenty of space and the best part is your car doesn't rub on any part of your undercarriage! They are designed for lower cars, which for us is a must b/c if it was a tradional ramp(those tall red ones made out of metal), I think my car would've scraped.
