Manual Tranny>>2nd Gear noise

Hello All,

Ive been noticing this quite a bit but When shifting into 2nd gear.. It feels very clicky or hard to get in gear.. Its not really a grind but it feels like theres no oil so its a rough feeling when shifting into 2nd.. every other gear is normal..

Anyone else have this problem?

Mine is a little notchy going into 2nd gear as well. Also, my friend that owns one says his is the same way.

I think it's just par for the course with these cars.

Dackel says you can run redline ATF in them to smooth it out, but I'm nervous running ATF in a manual transmission.

Mine has been like this forever as well. I find it is smoother when the car is hot(has been driving for a while).

My solution to this was shifting slower into 2nd.

I think the rev hang is to blame.

I found the Redline ATF helped a lot, still does it a little.

Might be the rev hang...i used to have a 2008 civic si....they were prevalent to be hard to put in 2nd gear (2nd grinded frequently if you shifted too fast....and it happened in most cars).

My 1 (2011) doesn't have that problem though :/

Mine is the same, notchy when shifting into 2nd and I have Redline fluid. I've found shifting slower helps especially when cold. When cold I usually shift 1st to 2nd by pulling out of 1st and let it hang in neutral for a moment and then pull it down into 2nd. When the car is fully warmed up after about 15 minutes it's much smoother. For normal driving I find myself shifting from 1st to 3rd a lot because the N54 has lots of usable torque.

I thought you weren't supposed to skip gears when upshifting......o_O but that you could skip gears when downshifting.....

I don't think there's any supposed to when shifting up or down, it just depends on where you're going to be in the rev range when you've changed to the selected gear and whether you've properly rev matched etc.

But yeah, in these gear boxes 1st and 2nd gear aren't easy... Going into second it's got something to do with the ratios as well I think. If you shift very quickly into 2nd it's always a bit jerky. Wait a little bit and it goes in easier and smoother. With 3rd and up you can just slam through them as fast as you want pretty much.

Try this. Just before you shift from 1-2 put a littler reward pressure (towards second). Not enough to prematurely move out of 1st, but just a little bit of pressure towards the next gear.

I do this when the car is cold all the way through 4th. I do agree with others that once the car is up to temp this should not be an issue but certainly helps keep things smooth of cold starts in the morning drive.

I've also found that shifting well before redline for the 1-2 shift helps a lot. If I try a really fast 1-2 shift above 6500 rpm its not uncommon to miss the shift. Shifting closer to 6000 or a little lower tends work out better. Any higher gears I can slam it fast at any rpm. I don't race from a dig much though so I usually just make the 1-2 shift nice and slow so its smooth.

My 1st to 2nd gear is the same. Has always been notchy and doesn't like to be rushed.
